"3181 Respond to 801 State. Report of a female crying, no further information."

Note; this a copy of an email I sent to few friends, so I have removed some of the identifying features for posting here.

Having trouble going back to sleep, someone was pounding at the front door so hard the whole house was seemed like it was shaking about 30 min. ago. I got up stumbled downstairs looked out the window and saw two policemen on the porch. I quickly put my (name of of weapon removed) out of sight (which I usually carry when someone is beating the hell out of my front door at 4:30 am) and answered, they asked what I was doing and I told them that "until recently, sleeping" they asked if there were any females in the house, I told them (name removed) was home and asleep they asked her age and when I told them they seemed confused and asked if there were any other females there, when I told them "no" they asked if we had the whole house, I told them "Yes it's a house not an apartment building"

Finally I asked what was going on, and in response they asked "Why someone had called 911 from the house" When I told them no one had, they told me that a "frantic 911 call had been received from ( my address removed), and that the dispatcher had heard a female crying/screaming 'Please don't hit me, don't hit me! Stop, please! before the sounds of a scuffle, at which point the line went dead.

I called (name removed) downstairs, the police asked her a few questions before asking me if we had Cincinnati Bell,

"No, we've got um...uh, Time Warner" I said."

"You've got digital phone service? What about your cell phones?"

"No, They're Sprint, we don't have any Bell service in this house. You don't know if it came from a cell or land line?"

The cop with the glasses shook his head. "They only told us it was a Cincinnati Bell line."

"And you're sure they said this address? "

"Yes, this address!!! (address removed)." Said the second cop who had been holding the flashlight.

We stood in silence for what seemed like about 20 minutes (but in all probability was just a few seconds) all exchanging somewhat bewildered looks.

Finally the first cop spoke.

"We're sorry to have disturbed you sir."

his partner added, "Have a good night"

The obvious subtext being "Have a good night, somewhere in close proximity to your house a woman is on the receiving end of violent attack and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it because we don't know where the call came from. Sleep well"

As they walked away one bit his lower lip while casting intense looks up and down the empty street as if he were trying to see inside the houses. The cop with the glasses just sadly shook his head.

I saw them make a few slow passes up and down the snow covered street in their car, and then they were gone, leaving at least the street, again quiet and deserted.

Good night indeed.

A note from CO;
The title of this thread does not directly relate to the story above, it is simply a dispatch I heard many years ago while listing to a police scanner. It is something I could not get out of my mind the rest of that night and something this mornings incident bought back to mind. The area around State Ave. is eerie during the day, but I heard that dispatch around 2:00 am on a cold and foggy night.
