Yes, I know. I`m not sure you understand it on my bad English, but I`ll try to explain.
This area of catacombs is under the fields. In the 1970s years our politicians have had a very unsuccessful geological reform. They spent the reclamation of fields, in a word they drained these fields and all the water went under ground, to the catacombs. Under a layer of limestone are gray-green clay, which do not allow water to pass on and it remains in the catacombs. This is the first cause momentary increase of water level.
After this during years the level has increased.
There are also a lot of geological problems of this area.

Mine Diving!!!!

We have a trip planned for this coming summer, here in Southern California, to do some mine diving.

Diving in the submerged catacombs seems like it would be absolutely fantastic! I love the way the surrounding walls and ceiling have that blocked-in look in some areas.

How often do you continue to explore into areas you've never been to yet? Or do you mostly now just re-explore places you've already been?

I'd imagine that after you've gone several miles in, it gets to be quite an expedition to carry everything you need for extended several-day-long trips in there.

I usually spend 2-3 days a week underground and try to explore something new because there are a lot of unknown areas.

You had mentioned that you have taken aqualungs down before (or at least I think you did). How many times have you used scuba down there?

In Odessa explorers tried to use scuba for many times, but unsuccessfully. The visibility under water falls in few seconds and you can not orientate.
I`ve used scuba in catacombs only for 2 times.

Ohhh ok. It's similar inside shipwrecks. Sometimes it's best if you use your feet as little as possible, make sure your buoyancy is as perfectly neutral as you can get, and pull yourself along with your fingers on the walls.
The floors always tend to silt things up really badly. Or lots of bubbles hitting the ceilings.

I'd still love to give it a shot sometime though... =(

Keep the pictures coming when you get a chance! They're fantastic. I really liked the ones with the old barrels, and the mining equipment.

Paris you can easily do with no guide, just a map and a decent head on your shoulders. Do not try that in Odessa.

its very cool and a great thread here. not sure how much fun i personally would have. over 500 miles of tunnels would get a little heavy on the mind. youd probably only do a few miles at a time anyway. although you might find a body, who knows?

Hello to all, my friends!
What`s new here in Ukraine and in our underground world? Hmmmm, a lot of interesting things to explore.

First of all, we have a new horrifying discovery. On this photo you can see remains of bones, that we found in the catacombs. They are here from the II WW and I`m sure that these bones are remnants of a German soldier, who was brutally killed by Soviet soldiers. I`m sure because we also found his helmet that was near the body. By the way, his skull was not found. Poor man was beheaded while still alive.


Another amazing find is several kilograms of drugs, banned chemicals, poisons and other things that are prohibited by Ukrainian law. All of this was safely hidden by local bandits in one of the dead-end maze of the catacombs.
Hope they don`t read this threat now))))


Here, in this fucking country politicians and bandits almost completely destroyed our poor country. Ordinary people have to starve, and in conditions of unemployment, economic crisis and so on could soon begin the revolution. Many explorers of catacombs are already preparing for it.

Most of bottles were send for inspection to police and some explorers had A LOT OF problems with police... It`s Ukraine, here is no law.

This is the first time I'm seeing this thread. What an awesome place. Of course I started with the party pics. ;) True friends. Really sad and shocking of the pictures that followed. I'm happy though that someone posted here and basically bumped this thread so I had a chanced to experience it. Thanks

That's exactly what I thought when I saw those last two posts. Couldn't believe cops or hobos hadn't stolen the stuff.

Then I remembered his stories and pictures of just how EXTENSIVE and maze-like and crazy the catacombs are, and it made more sense. My guess is cops don't go in unless they absolutely have to for some reason, and in the same way hobos don't carry around enough lighting and other gear in order to penetrate that deeply into those places.

Makes me drool to see those pictures though. (the guns, more than the drugs, lol)
