| | | | Shea Stadium < on 5/30/2009 2:38 PM >
| | | I had to wait a while to post these, but this is probably my favorite set of pictures I've ever taken, not so much cause there great shots, but the personal meaning of them. For those that aren't from the area, Shea Stadium was the home of the New York Mets. It also used to be the Jets stadium until they moved to Jersey. Lots of other important events happened here, such as The Beatles first concert in the US. 2008 was the Mets final season there, its since been torn down and replaced by CitiField. I've been a Mets fan my entire life, I grew up going to games here, my mom grew up going to games here, its a very special place to me. I was even at the last game ever played there and closing ceremonies. As soon as I knew it would closing, I started wondering if I would be able to explore it before it got torn down. It was almost surreal exploring a place that I've been to hundreds of times while it was active, and seeing it in pretty much half demolished condition. The whole night was a once in a lifetime experience, which I can't say about any other exploring I've done. I wish I'd done a better job with the pictures, but I was more just taking in being there for the last time. The pictures are in order from bottom to top -
And just for comparison, here is a shot I took when it was active -
I'd been really upset about the stadium being torn down after all those years of going there, and yet after shooting these pictures, I was ok with it, like it was my own way of saying goodbye, more so then the actual closing ceremonies. And I've already been to a dozen or so games at CitiField, and the place is amazing. And I'm already wondering if in another 50 years I'll get to explore that one, lol.

| | | Very nice set, evocative! Love all of them, but the ramp photos are my favorites. Dig the shadows and lighting.

| | | this is awesome. the feeling was the same when the vet came down, but the bank is such an upgrade. these new ballparks are so much better than those old multipurpose stadiums.

| | | Wow!! Cool set of pics! I've seen hundreds of demo pics on the internet, but none at night and certainly none from inside the fence. I only went to Shea once (in 2007), but it was enough to feel attached to it and a little sad to see it torn down. I'd probably be REALLY sad had I been there many times.

Yeah, they actually did a nice job with it. First, second, third, home and the pitchers mound are all marked like that, I just only posted the one pic. I love how they used the outline of the neon baseball players that used to be on the side of Shea. Last game I went to, I actually ran the bases once the parking lot cleared out.

I meant the old bases of Shea, those markers are in whats now the parking lot for CitiField, so after a game once the cars clear out you can walk the old bases. Its a nice little touch instead of just letting the old stadium be totally forgotten. I guess I should have been a bit more clear on that, these pictures are pretty old, I couldn't post them right away for a couple reasons, that whole thing is now leveled and paved over as the parking lot, with only those markers left.

| | | Lots of great shots here! It's very cool that you got to explore a place that meant so much to you. I think my favorite shots are the last few, with the old stadium and the new stadium in the same shot.

| | | Abso-fucking-loutely amazing. EDIT: I remember when the old Comiskey Park in Chicago got torn down in 1990. I wanted soooo bad to go inside and look around, but dad wouldn't let me (I was only 8...lol). He did let me swipe a piece of brick which had fallen outside the fence. Its still in my closet at my parents house in Tennessee. Exploring something like a closed down stadium is super high on my UE to-do list, though I don't expect the chance happens all that much. Again, super set. [last edit 6/5/2009 9:30 AM by WarBird69 - edited 1 times]
