Jeez man, I can't believe there's a whole private sector here dedicated to light painting.

I'm amazed at how far the concept has come in 20 years.

When I first started doing this in 1989, there were only a few people in the world doing hand held lighting during time exposures, with any regularity. They were mainly studio shooters. Near as I can tell I was the first one to bring LP (and night shooting for that matter) into a UE context.

Look at it now. UE/NP/LP is fucking everywhere! A bona fide "school of photography." Did I really start all this?

edit: Fuckall if I can post images here.

I've seen light painting shots from the 1920's and earlier- I'm sure it's been "started" thousands of times independently. It's just that the internet allows for the much more rapid dissemination of cool ideas.

Man there's some really great work in this thread. It's really amazing to see how creative people can really get taking a photo of stuff that's not there and drawing it in manually. Especially when these epic locations are added in. Here's a couple of my own.

1.

Super Illumination by Owls Flight Photography, on Flickr

2.

Ghostly Missile Master Room by Owls Flight Photography, on Flickr

3.

4.

5.

I'm glad I found this thread and look forward to the future additions.

You misunderstand my point.

Adding light dates back to the beginnings of photography. (Think about the cliche in western movies of the photographer taking pictures with the exploding tray of flash powder) Continuous source lights have been used in the movies since 1900. The strobe was invented in about 1930, and instantly swept the world of studio photography.

Night and time exposures date to the beginning too. Don't forget, the very first picture ever taken was an 8 hour exposure!

The human fascination with ruins, and the depiction of them in art, is as old as civilization itself.

Like I alluded to in my original post, I didn't invent any of those 3 elements.
But I was the first person to combine the three. The creation of the very specific UE/NP/LP aesthetic that there's this whole PM section at UER dedicated to? Thank me for that.

I've studied this niche for a long time now and know the work of all the major night shooters, light painters, and ruins photographers, since the beginning of photography. No one did work in these kinds of locations, that looked like this, before me. Now it's everywhere.

Thanks for fixing that post Meta!

Here's a few I shot at a Draining meet-up I organized in Denver. (cross-posted from the Four Corners local forum, but I think they belong here too)

...it's hard to shoot long exposures with 11 people running around in a drain, but it made for some interesting results!

I nearly forgot this place existed, but I'm not sure I'm too welcome, seeing as I own less than 10 flashlights.

Regardless- this may count.

For those curious of process:

Plug in contractor lights. Move some contractor lights (the standalone sort, don't plug in the chains of caged lights) from mezzanine to ground level after hunting for plugs. Bounce some off ceiling. Try to reduce shadow and burn. Plug in more lights. Blow a fuse that is apparently attached to fire alarm system. Panic, consider bolting, run to fuse box, find code to reset alarm. Hide. Realize fire department is not coming. Further readjust lights while using small, cooly balanced LEDs for fill. Take shots.

Get the hell out just in case fire department is still coming.

Encounter drug addicts trying to do a drop near your entry point. Hope to repeat process soon.

Hope that because you shot a theatre as opposed to a drain, you aren't forever shunned.

Get down, girl, go 'head, get down.
