So what are the specs on that? Can it only nail stationary vehicles or can it hit a moving target too?

If it can get a clear shot of the plate it can. You have to confirm the plate before running it through.

Request for Proposals should give you some idea of what it's capabilites are to be.

It works on moving cars, speeding cars, stationary cars depending on the positioning of the cameras. The Ministry of Transportation will provide a 'hot sheet' daily of stolen vehicles/plates.

Here's an interesting video of a Toronto police car and their in-car plate reader.

The OPP's new automated licence plate reader...

Not quite what I seen. On the OPP cruiser I seen it on, it looked like a pair of novelty sized small black hockey sticks. I only seen the view from the back and at the side of the cruiser. No idea what the front of the "hockey sticks" look like.

Its possible that the ones I seen were the same things as in the picture, but they might have been attached to some sort of mount moving them more to the side of the vehicle for a better view? It would explain why they looked like a pair of hockey sticks from the angle I seen it.

Yeah, they run it against a separate database than the full blown vehicle registry.

Not a post of a picture, but a question.

On my way to work today, I seen an OPP cruiser with what looked like a pair of little black hockey sticks sticking out from the light bar on the roof. They appeared to be attached to the light bar horizontally, with the "blade" part of the hockey stick pointing down at a slight angle, almost looking like a second set of miniature side-veiw mirrors.

The OTHER thing it could be, dependent on the location- is a 407ETR transponder reader- this is mounted on the corners of the lightbar, at an angle. Looks like a square box, about 4" x 4" by 1" deep. This is used for 407 ETR enforcement, as they can "scan" the transponder located in a vehicle. Normally they only use this for commercial enforcement. (as I have been told before)

Tried to find a image, but I cannot online.. sorry

Wow. Welcome to the 1980's, OPP!

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

This is hotlinked off of a friends facebook because I have yet to get a picture of one myself. Birmingham Metro Police really use these! You don't see them every day though. I wonder what they were thinking when they decided to use some smart cars as Police cars (Budget crunch!?). And imagine being the cop who has to drive around in one.

Here's one from the Mercedes/Smart Car Museum in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Germany that I took a few years ago:

We never had any vehicles like that!

Our fleet consisted of highly outdated CVPI's and a couple ford explorers for the K-9 folks.
