Entry: Pop (a manhole)
originally posted by Dougo

A term used by explorers of tunnels that can be exited via manhole/access shafts.

The term originated in the late 1980s and generally refers to when a jammed manhole cover is forced loose from below, however it is often used to describe the general removal of a manhole cover.

Often one explorer would ask, "Can you pop it?" to another that was attempting to pry the manhole loose.

Some explorers will use a mallet, Mag-Lite or other device to try and crack the seal before popping the manhole.
