| | | For those of you who watched M*A*S*H, this is the town area where the show was intended to be set. Of course it was really filmed somewhere in California, but this is where the real M*A*S*H would have been. Thanks to the loose lips of a friend in the USFK, I discovered there are several US army bases sitting empty up in Uijeongbu. Here's a map of the town. I know Camp Red Cloud and Camp Stanley are still active, and Camp Kyle and Camp Falling Water are in use by Koreans, but the others have been just sitting abandoned since 2005.
1 I left Uijeongbu Station and headed north. Here's a South Korean soldier, presumably on leave for the weekend.
2 This was on the light post outside Camp Essayons.
3 Camp Essayons, totally abandoned and under no visible guard. Just a high wall with razor wire stops me from going in.
4 There were a few Korean businesses built on the outer side of the wall. From what I understand these businesses weren't happy with the bases being shut down.
5 A glance back over my shoulder toward Uijeongbu City. A small town by Korean standards with less than half a million people, it's a major center of US bases.
6 This little control gimmick claimed to be an "Original Billboard Computer."
7 I found this outside the front gate to Essayons. The label is in Japanese and I think it's some kind of mixer.
8 So tempting.
9 I can just imagine Radar watching this mountain waiting for helicopters to return from the front lines.
10
11 Traditional Ferengi costume.
12 At the front gate.
13 There was a Korean graveyard outside the camp wall.
14 An amusing "before" picture.
15 "After."
16 In front of Camp Kyle, there were all these stone figurines. I think they were part of a tombstone shop.
17 Camp Kyle was abandoned by the USFK, but ROK soldiers continue to guard it. I witnessed a bunch of soldiers running around playing a sport under that one structure with no walls.
18 The train tracks were long abandoned.
19 Camp Sears looks the easiest to get into.
20 Not as many buildings in this one.
Anyway, I need to know more about the legality of this before doing anything brave. At Essayons and Sears, the gates are locked but nobody's home, and there's nothing left that's of tactical importance, but the only other military building I've been in was an air force department store so I don't want to do anything that would get me shipped to an undisclosed Eastern European nation. If I get caught, can I tell them you're my commanding officer? Half the problem is legal worries. The other half is finding a way over the 8-foot-tall fence with razor wire.

Tyler Durden just throws an old rubber mat over the razor wire. Surely a real person can do the same? He wasn't even an explorer.
You betcha |

| | | Nice adventure you had there Jon. Reminds me of a few sites i've encountered here down in the south. I remember stumbling across an abandoned army training base. It was pretty cool with some targets painted as North Korean soldiers. I was in the process of taking one when i was spotted by a local! You gotta be careful about entering those places. Although they're abandoned they still belong to the state (very much like abandoned public schools) and the locals won't like Mr Johnny Foreigner aiming for a quick peek!

I'd like to hear more about the army training base. What happened? Was this just some random passerby, or a guard of some kind? Also, I've never had any difficulty with abandoned public schools.

| | | If it's US property and you get caught you get tried by a US court and end up in US prison? I don't know how they compare to Korean Prisons but that might make the decision easier

I believe it's Korean property that was leased to the US. The abandoned camp that is being guarded, Kyle, has Korean soldiers out front. By the way, Korean prisons are much nicer than US prisons.

| | | I have a Korean friend who spent three months in prison for public (televised) nudity. He said when he got out that the food was awesome, and he gained weight from the good diet. Pretty well all he did all day was relax and watch TV. You probably don't get much privacy in Korean prisons, but there's not much of a gang problem, and they don't have the high incidence of murders and rapes that US prisons do.
