Tetanus (also called lockjaw) is caused by a bacteria commonly found in dust, dirt, and feces. Any wound which break the skin (regardless of size, though the deeper the wound the worse the risk) can result in tetanus. Onset of tetanus generally consists of a headache, followed by stiffening of muscles in the jaw and neck, difficulty swallowing, stiffening of abdominal muscles, sweating/fever, and spasms as well. Tetanus can lead to death as the infected person loses the ability to swallow and can die from suffocation (by the locked muscles).

Urban explorers are at particularly high risk for tetanus, due to the often dirty locations they visit. Prevention is easy though, with a simple vaccination. After the initial vaccination, a booster shot is needed every 10 years to keep you protected.

If you do happen to cut/scrape yourself while exploring, and have not had a tetanus shot within 10 years then you should get yourself to a doctor within 24 hours of the injury and get vaccinated. After that time, the vaccine gets progressively less effective at counteracting the possible tetanus infection.
