The Love of My Life--A Narrative of my First UE

If there's any particular structure that sparked my love for UE, it's this one. It's big and imposing, solid brick standing defiant amidst the cookie-cutter neighborhoods popping up all around it. It's old, it's out of place, it's a hindrance to development, and...it's fabulous.

I live in the neighborhood behind it--yes, a cookie-cutter neighborhood, but that's all I can afford. (But we won't get into that.) Anyhow, I wandered over to this house one day to do a little scouting, with the guise of just snapping some photos of the outside. There were construction workers all about and heavy traffic on the road in front of it. Up close the house was more fantastic than I'd imagined. Weather-worn and beautifully aged, the house was a testament to what this area used to be. The house was built in 1850.

I wandered around back. The door was wide open. As I stepped closer, it became very apparent that this house had been abandoned for some time, and the back door had been open a long time as well. Vines grew into the sunroom in the back through the open door. I stepped inside.

The sunroom in the back was full of trash and bits and pieces of furniture and hardware. A bathroom sink. A refrigerator. A bright red bird cage.

The door to the kitchen was shut. Cautiously, I turned the knob. Unlocked.

The kitchen looked like it had been ransacked. Had someone been looking for something? What had happened here? The house was so littered that it was difficult to navigate without stepping on something or hearing a loud crack.

The rest of the house was much the same--books and papers scattered everywhere. Broken furniture, photo albums, letters, homework, craft supplies...you name it, this house has it. There were so many personal items it was unbelievable.

I've since been back many times. Even in broad daylight, nobody seems to notice or care who is in there. I've begun doing research on the house, which the personal items inside have aided with. I've taken so many photos, but unfortunately most are trapped on my home computer until I remember to burn them and bring them into work. Unfortunately that means I have no photos of the outside of the house except for this one, which is just the back of the house.

But for the sake of reference, here is the county auditor's photo of the house, which doesn't do it justice, and here is also a picture of the house in 1959.

I'll post more photos and research later. Maybe I'll do a forum thread on it when I get some photos that aren't so overexposed (I was playing with color...and then forgot to save the originals) and I get further into my research.
