Turtorial for beginners.Basic Sneaking,Hiding, and Night Exploration.

This tutorial will guide you through some basic sneaking, hiding, and night exploring. Most of these tips will seem obvious to experienced UE'ers but for those that are just starting it can be a big help. I will use various photos from other UE trips I've made to help.

*BASIC SNEAKING*
Note: I recommend choosing an easy location for your first try.

*I chose this mall as my first UE

The first thing to do before entering a location is to observe it from a distance, this is so you can get a feel for the security, and make sure it is abandoned. Try to find a route of entrance and a route of exit, make sure both are inconspicuous and you have a back-up way to exit. This can be done by
going to a nearby parking lot or business or using Google Earth.

In the photo above I have used both ways described

After this, you can pretty safely move closer to the abandonment.

When you have reached the abandonment find a spot to easily enter and exit from. NEVER EVER bust through a door/window, it will give you away and can be considered B&E.

This is an inside pic of the mall.Luckily a few stores were open,so I was able to walk right in.If this is not the case, just scout around, your bound to find an entrance.

You can now enter and take your pics and explore. While inside watch out for things that are dangerous i.e.; bad floors, snakes, spiders, rusty nails, and hobos etc.Just be observant.

When exiting make sure you first observe the area from a window to make sure no cops, security etc. are present. If they are, take your back-up exit route. If cops/security spot you, don't run unless you can absolutely get away, but more than likely staying is the best way to go.I have run from security in a car and made it to the exit. They gave up. Security usually stops chasing you once you leave the property so I'll let you choose. If you have to explain yourself to cops, simply tell them you just went in for photography, they usually leave and in some cases, apologize for bothering you.

In this case a mall cop began to chase me,I made it to the exit and got away.

Now exit back to your car.You have just completed your first UE.

*HIDING*
Hiding can mean the difference between getting caught and escaping.

You can see the tall weeds and shrubs, along with various decorations that provide cover at this mini golf course.

When exploring an abandonment with tall weeds or an area with random junk use these for cover.Crouch while approaching. If you see a guard coming in your direction hide in another room or amongst junk and grass.
You can also hide to avoid thugs and other troublemakers.

*NIGHT EXPLORING*

Night Exploring can be a good time to avoid conflict. If you plan on exploring at night you may want to observe the area and try to memorize the layout. This is so you can approach without using a light.

Once inside use a light that's not brighter than the sun, use one that suits your exploring style. Bright lights attract attention, so use one that allows you to see well without being discovered.I would recommend a small L.E.D light.

Lights like these are good for Night exploration when you dont need to see eveything. Not heavy, cheap, and long battery life.

Try not to stir up a lot of dust because if you use flash these particles will reflect back.

Try to be careful about where you explore at night as well. You don't want to be accused of being a pervert or peeping tom and have someone's husband come out and beat the crap out of you. This means that exploring in the middle of a neighborhood might not be the best idea, unless you're sure no one will notice or mind.

I hope this helps those new to UE. I know to me as well as other it may seem like common since but to a newbie it might be a big help.

finally another tutorial, slowly well make many. Im still debating whether i should make a tutorial on something, i was first going to do scouting and recon, but then i realized, i was getting more into military tactics and active buildings, than UE, so i stopped that, unless of course everyone on the forum wants paramilitary knowledge and the ability to train with that knowledge, man that be scarey wouldnt it? A bunch of thousand or so UEers having that kinda knowledge, doesnt it make you cringe?

If it does now you know how the government feels and how the power of can fear works against you.

If it doesnt, you know what it feels like to have free will surrounding you, that free public knowledge. Knowledge is power. So having open knowledge for everyone makes everyone having the potential as equally powerful.

I love doing things in which others have no idea even exist, dont you?

Glad everyone liked it.I thought we needed some tutorials since most topics in this forum were only asking for tutorials, not giving them.I added some more pics and info to it as well.

Go for it, UE encompasses active buildings, and I would love to read that sorta thing. Live / partially live infils make the most entertaining readings on here too.

As for the "it will give you away and can be considered B&E." While true, you forgot two things. First of you're damaging someones propery, which is being a <use your imagination>, and you all ready have a possible B&E on you.

Really, opening a door is B&E. Even unlocked. So, its more like B or E.

Nice guide, although I'd like to mention the most important part of sneaking is not drawing attention by looking like you're sneaking.

If you have any more you'd like to add to the hiding section I'd love to read it.

Night UE Tips:
Leave the lights off as much as possible.
Use flash sparingly.
If you have a LED flashlight (very good reccomendation btw) and you need to use both hands for something (cough picking cough) put the light in your mouth. By pulling your lips back you can control how much light comes out. Just don't get too much spit in it or it won't come out.
Dark colors, pereferably not back.
Headlights are the easiest way to see someone coming, so if you see any, or see any pass across something go to full alert.
Before exiting, go to the back of the room and moving slowly, look through a window, checking for people.
Especially at night, the human eye is attracted to movement, so your default reaction should be to freeze, perhaps dropping to a crouch.
Avoid siloutetting yourself against the skyline. This is the most obvious you can be at night w/o making noise.
As always, try to keep quiet, placing/rolling your steps and such.
Have fun? That is the point after all.

This is good stuff.

More general UEing:

I was always taught that the cardinal rule of UEing is to never go alone. People certainly do, but it can be dangerous and... creepy for a beginner to be alone in an abandoned building, especially at night. I wouldnt recommend going with more than three others, though. Having to keep track of people is never good.

If you're going at night, you have to be more aware and more careful. The police are less likely to believe you're 'just in taking pictures' if its the middle of the night. If its possible, scout it out/ do a preliminary look around during the day to check the condition the floors are in, etc.

Most importantly, stay aware of everything around you while UEing. Have fun.

What I meant was, there were about 2 stores open,so the entrance nearest those was too.I had to squeeze past the barricade first. From there I was able to get into all the backrooms of the closed stores.Last time I checked, when I go shopping I dont usually go into the backrooms of the stores.

Don't park your car on their property and avoid letting them see your car. They don't have jurisdiction outside the property, but they can certainly call your license plate to the local police department and cause you to get pulled over a few minutes later.

There are good and effective approaches to monitoring security activity and one of them is to listening in on their radio communcation. First, do the research on the name of the site, property owner, management company and or the security company.

Most of them have a privilege on specific frequencies within a band allocated for security use.

The registrant information and call signs are public domain in the states. Once you have the registrant's name and/or the call sign, you can get the exact frequency from FCC's records. Punch them into your scanner.

I'd like to add something if I may...

The first thing that attracts the eye is movement. So if you feel that someone is heading your way, don't dive off to the side or slam your body to the ground as fast as you can. Before, you were just slightly visible to them. But suddenly, they see something large move real fast out of the corner of their eye in the darkness, and obviously they become suspicious. Just move slowly, and you'll be alright.

I know what you mean by this, and this is the rule I always follow (thus making it understandable)

But the thing is, during a wild and unexpected talk with my step-father (a police sargent) He explained to me that "It does not matter whether you actually BREAK anything, and enter the building. If you enter a closed building (not property), The charge will be Breaking and entering because there no other executable law. So...drat eh?

(these may only apply to maritime canada)

No way. there is no way that a mall would be left to decay in jersey. I 'm not sure something like that would not be possible.

there are big strip malls that have been or are still abandoned, like bradlees on 23(was) or laneco on 22(is) so it is possible

Whenever possible, wear quiet shoes. Shoes with hard soles make lots of noise, shoes with soft soles may squeak. Running shoes are great if you don't need the protection of sturdy shoes, and they'll come in handy if you actually need to run in them.

I'm always looking for good places to hide while I explore. Keep your eyes open for that, you never know when or if you'll need a good spot to lay low.

Stopping every few minutes to listen and look can keep you from being caught off guard. Be extra cautious when passing windows and doorways, this would be a good time to wait and listen carefully. Hopefully if you hear something, you've already spotted a good place to hide and you know right where to go.
