 | The State Hospital

| Well, a few days ago I went with a couple of friends to UE at the State Hospital in Southern Indiana. Two of them are users: Cowboy Wayne and Shai Hulud. The others are two girls we will call Kitty and Maggs. We put it together at the last minute, last friday when we were all leaving school. We were going to meet at a local Ice Cream Shop, but Cowboy, Shai, and myself were late thanks to Shai's shitty driving skills. We pulled into Lics just as Kitty and Maggs were leaving. We rolled down the windows, decided to meet up at Kitty's. Shai managed to maul several lawn decorations with his driving, but we eventually got into Kitty's house. I had my bag over my shoulder as we went in, as Kitty had kindly forgotten to tell us that her mom thought we were all seniors going to dinner to celebrate the end of the year. I discreetly chucked my bag out the door and into a bush and came back in. After relaying to cat the need to NOT where a bright orange shirt, we were finally off.
We parked across the street from the park where the hospital is located. We waited for the cars to clear and we sprinted into the trees across the street. After regrouping and assuring Shai that he should not be freaking out, we proceeded to the perimeter fence that had been erected around the site.
-----INTERJECTION---> The Hospital is now being demolished, at the time this took place, they had brought down around 15% of the structures (about 6 structures made up the compound). There were many parts of the upper building that did not have support under them except for small chunks of walls that had been missed.
------RESUME-----------> We decided the best entrance was through the locked main gate (raised around 7 1/2 inches off of the ground) and began to slip through while two us held up the fence. I still have a scab from a rock that I nailed with my elbow while crawling across the pavement. Once inside, Cowboy and I checked to make sure we had all of our gear in order and headed into the compound to assess the damage. Kitty was pretty upset, she and Maggs had been there countless times and had begun to grow attached to the place. The main building which has the general shape of a "U" with large block covering the base. The arms of the "U" had had most of their guts removed, so we took the main entrance to the block first. It was very dark inside and I believe Cowboy got a good silhouette shot of the rest of us standing near the entrance. We then went onto the 2nd floor main entrance via the inside of the lobby (the stairs outside had long ago been removed). After that we headed further into the main block, looking at the murals and other things on the walls. We found lots of CAT5, but didn't take any for fear of being caught, plus there was nowhere to put it, Cowboy already had a Tripod and full bag and I had a full bag + a big flashlight. the others had nothing else to carry it. We were going to go climb across some of the rubble in the main courtyard, but I noticed just in time that there were lots of thin metal rods sticking everywhere out of the rubble. If we had fallen while walking I would say we would have had a 50% chance of being impaled. We decided, obviously, not to cross the rubble. We looked around at the buildings a bit more, wandering perhaps too far into the open, and then it happened for the first time: A car drives by slowly, possibly having gotten a call that we were there or something. We're not sure. We got out of our hiding spots when we were sure he was gone. After that Shai and I shot the last few pictures in the series where I stand next to the "No Trespassing" signs.
Perhaps it was because Shai was retarded and took too many flash pictures in the open or left his light on too long, or maybe not, but for whatever reason the car came by again, we could tell it was the same one because he had a busted tail light. probably a security guard. We decided to get a few more pictures WITHOUT flash and get the hell outta dodge. Shai, once again, had his flash on and it went off really bright, reflected off of some piece of construction equipment, and made all kinds of bright light. We decided to book it then and there.
Cowboy and I held the fence for Shai, Kitty, and Maggs and I was about to head under as well with Shai helping Cowboy hold the gate up from the outside, and the car came back AGAIN. The girls and Shai took off and hit the dirt behind some trees, Cowboy and myself grabbed our gear and went down into some tall grass. He came to a near stop and looked around, and then drove off very, very slowly. At that point Cowboy and I took off for the gate, I slipped under and Cowboy tossed me my Minolta and my bag. I went to try to hold the gate up but it was a bit much for one person, so Cowboy tossed me his tripod, Minolta, and bag, and then he hopped over the fence. We sorted out our crap and booked it for the trees where we came in. We got out ok and made it to the cars. Kitty and Maggs led us back to Kitty's house where one more surprise awaited us.
We pulled up to Kitty's and saw that while we were gone a FUCKING TREE LIMB THAT WEIGHED AT LEAST 750 lbs. HAD FALLEN RIGHT NEXT TO HRE HOUSE. NO STORM OR ANYTHING, JUST FUCKING BROKE. It turns out that if Shai had waited to pull out a few minutes longer the damn thing would have landed on his Forenza. We told the girls bye, dropped Cowboy off, and Shai and me came back to my place. We played StarCraft: Brood War for a long time then Shai went home. We're going again sometime soon.
