Is that good enough for protection against mold, asbestos, and other possible harmful chemicals. My friend was saying army surplus stores downtown have gas masks and they might not be too expensive. Are they more effective at filtering things? Or is it just better against tear gas and other things like that.
I know those gas masks cover the eyes which can be good, but in my case I dont think I'd want something going over my eyes, since I need to look through my SLR camera viewfinder.
I'll probably end up getting a P-100 thing, but I'd like to know what it can handle exactly, if anyone knows.

P100 is another name for oil-proof 99.97% HEPA filter. It is good against particulate matters including, but not limited to lead dust, asbestos, mold, bio-hazards (commonly present on many sites in the form of rodent urine tainted dust that may have hanta virus).
It is ineffective against harmful gases. If you want protection against the aforementioned + harmful gases like solvent, chlorine, etc, get the 3M 60926 Multi-gas, vapor and P100 cartridges. The 60926 cost around $20/pair + $10 or so for the respirator body.

Actually, P100 particulate only filters are readily available and that's all you need if you only need protection against particulate matters. Asbestos and hanta infested particles are common, but exposure to toxic gases isn't common unless you're exploring industrial facilies in disrepair with chemicals still on site.
That one is cooler looking, but looks more expensive than the 3M 6000 series with 60926 filters that offers the same protection. I recommend the 3M 6091 P100 filters unless you need the toxic gas filtration capability of the 60926 cartridges, because the 60926 is around $20/pair while the P100 is around $6/pair.
DO NOT get an allergy grade mask. 3M makes a cheap model 8093 P100 mask that looks like this, but 3M specifically says not to use this for asbestos.
The 6091 P100 is approved for use with asbestos. unfortunately, it is ugly magenta. Airgas sells a combo package of the 6000 series + the 2091 filter for $17.

The cartridge is a general cartridge that protects against 10 different kinds of gas and vapor as well as having a P100 particle filter.
And it seals perfectly even with my beard.
Also with North, you can buy specific replacement parts w/o having to buy a whole new mask.
I also purchased a pair of safety goggles so my eyes are covered but I can still take pics. here I purposely went with the low light contrast enhancing pair for obvious reasons.

I didn't say impossible. I just said hard. I found it easier to find a multi-filter cannister.

IT doesnt look exactly like this, but I think this is the one they have.
The P95 masks seems to be alot more common, but not good for mold or asbestos which is probably what I would have to worry about the most.
*Update* Ok I read the other posts now.. I havent checked out places like HomeDepot yet.

$50 is entirely too much. Airgas has locations throughout the US and Canada. You can call up a branch and order them for in store pick up.
The one most UEers would want is a P100 respirator and it is only $17.

Personally, I would NOT get a surplus respirator. The rubber on respirator deteriorates like all rubber products and if it doesn't make a good seal with your face, it is useless. You don't know the history behind surplus products.
