fifth story derision

a few weeks ago, my girl and i discovered a storm drain that ran under some parking lots near capitol blvd. we awkwardly negotiated passage thru standing water until she eventually backed out (random note: we broke up a few days later...). recently i decided to return. it offered many great little chambers and ran far longer than i thought. i was thoroughly disoriented when i emerged from the outfall... always a good feeling.

...but that's beside the point.

later that night, after devouring sugar and caffeine at dunkin doughnuts, i cut thru campus to get back to my car before sunrise. past empty classrooms and the occasional student pedestrian (they're always so fucking happy) i walked, until i saw... her. a beautiful, mysteriously lit five story shell of an old hall currently under renovation. basically, she had been stripped down to an eery mix of decaying brick and replacement steel beams. "oh, i'll just take a peek thru the hoarding" i lied to myself. when my eyes met the splendidly stark shadows, partially broken walls, and ladders beckoning me upward, i was a possessed to slide in for further investigation.

each floor offered a good vantage point, but i had to go higher. i reached the top and spent the next 2 hours or so finishing a book and just basically chilling. i was the master of campus, bitter towards higher education, and i had to piss. it only followed logically to walk to the edge of the roof and bestow my gift on the college. i had no sooner zipped up when 3 guys in running shorts rounded the corner directly below... lucky for them, they missed a golden shower, however, their luck would soon change. it was dark and i was high above, but i could tell they were anxious. i immediately connected a police siren in the distance with their shady little jaunt. after all, they were on the wrong side of the hoarding barriers. i looked on, amused. they picked the absolute worst place to stop and hop the barrier. the first guy made it over without much trouble and jogged off into the night. the second busted his ass on the way down, but brushed it off and went to join the other. the third failed miserably altogether. either he was exhausted, or simply sucked at jumping fences, but whichever the case, he just couldn't make it over. his buddies where nowhere to be seen, however he didn't have long to feel sorry for himself. i was right about the siren. on his second or third attempt, security rounded the corner and stopped right in front the unfortunate trespasser. he was caged in. building to one side, fence and cop on the other. i ducked down instinctively. when i peeked over again, i saw the lad with hands on head pressed against a wall. altho i was nearly invisible, i figured security would be eyeing the old building with greater care. i was right. from another viewpoint, i watched as a raleigh cop (not the campus security i saw before) drove around the construction site looking for other trouble makers. i had to cross a number of well lit areas and much of the building lacked walls, leaving me exposed to the open night air. luckily i could time out the cop's patrol fairly accurately. i've found that in a situation like this, it's best to just take a few breaths and wait for a good time to move.

i got down without a hitch and made it off campus without being stopped. i was covered from head to toe in grey dust from climbing concrete walls and hopping shadows, but the rising sun didnt betray my appearance to anyone on my walk away from there. i hope to get some pictures before they finish the building.

in conclusion, be patient so you can laugh at others who lack patience.
