Methane?
< on 3/20/2006 2:29 PM >
Posted on Forum: Infiltration Forums

A few friends and I have found a storm drain. There is a fair amount of water in it. Probably about chest deep. There is mud at the bottom that I poked with a stick and something bubbles up. Is this methane? Is it safe to go in there or is this a clear sign that I should stay out of it.

It probably is, people illegally dump stuff all the time. I still think we at least go further in on the dry end.Maybe we could go later today.

Personally, I would recommend staying out unless you know for certain, without a doubt, what is causing it and that it is safe. I have personally seen a 15,000 volt electric cable bubble like that, looks just like air or gas, and the bubbles were caused by arching in the wires. Not a safe situation at all.

Doesn't organic matter in general emit some kind of gas while rotting? N.

Yeah, it does. And chances are what is bubbling is completely harmless. But I just wouldn't venture into it without knowing. Especially being chest deep and unable to see what your next step is, and in a drain.

Longer might you live if you heed the Rat's advice. In confined spaces methane in large enough concentration, can suffocate a person. The bubbling gas could be hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs. It is extremely toxic, and may fatigue your sense of smell so it's not noticed after continued exposure. The effects are cumulative, and in higher concentrations one breath will cause instant collapse. Death. If one of your fellow explorers is stricken in this manner you will not be able to rescue them, as you'll be lucky to even get out yourself.

usually a good test for sufficient amounts of oxygen is lighting a match, HOWEVER this is not a good idea if you think there are high levels of ambient methane, as methane is very flammable. whether or not there are other inexpensive ways to test composition (not spectrograph), i dont know, but you should make sure to know what you'll be breathing.

A flame can burn long after you pass out from lack of O2.

21% Normal Concentration at 70 F

14% at 70 F lowest point of Combustion

17% Some Impairment of Coordination

9% Unconsciousness

6% Death within a few minutes

2% can support combustion if temp is high enough (a burning match uses an oxidizer to ignite so it will reach a high temp rapidly)

No, but I think I'm going to try it as soon as the weather gets slightly warmer. I may not go far because I'm still a little nervous about the air, but the entrance is pretty wide and this place just looks too good to pass up!

It's probably Helium DiSulphide. A deadly storm drain gas. You will surely die without protection like a goofy little mask like everyone else wears.

I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner!

Those "goofy masks" are respirators and we wear them so we don't...oh, I don't know...die.

This is why we don't tell you anything important.

These "goofy" masks, since you are being obtuse and completely ignorant, protects you from PCB's, asbestos, mold, among many other hazardous airbourne particles and chemicals. They cost money, and protect you from getting cancer.

Find them at your local hardware store. And not those paper masks, but real respirators.

Please, next time search around on the forum. There are 1000 threads on this already.

Even if your no longer concerned about the methane or other gasses in the water, if you cant see where your going, dont. Would be a rather nasty supprise to jump into a pool of water, and end up with a piece of rebar or something up your backside. There was this tunnel system near my house I was thinking of exploring, the first few times I checked it, it was full of water. I went back after a dry spell, and checked it again. When i looked down, there was a LOT of trash down there, stuff that would cut you up badly, break bones, and the like.

Yeap, a compound fracture, or a deep laceration would not be good in waist deep water. Then you have to get out, as your going into shock in that waist deep water.
