Moran Power Plant
entry by Zack
3/12/2006 3:16 PM

I'm back in Burlington now, and yesterday it was really nice out, so I went exploring. During the day I found the remains of an old nasty chemical place, a burned down cabin in the woods, and I rode by the Moran Power Plant. The building is quite large and has these cool staircases all up one side. I'm not sure how long it's been abandoned, but the city's been trying to do something with it for a few years now. Some boating club uses the back side of the building as a dock and they store their boats around the other side of the plant. Because of this, the whole place is fenced off.

To cut things short, I got in. Well it was more I got on. I climbed up the side of the lowest roof so I had access to the cool stairs. I was about to go up them/try to get in through a hole I found when I heard something. I got that "that's not a me sound" feeling and stopped moving. I'm still not sure exactly what it was, but it sounded like drums coming from inside the building. The banging changed in intensity and I couldn't discern any kind of pattern to the sound that would make it something natural. I was alone so I got out of there. I'm going back with another UEr tonight. Updates to follow.

UPDATE:
I went back with three other people. This is a long story so I'll shorten it as much as possible. Eventually I got into the main yard, no entrances there. After scouting around for half an hour I was testing out my roof entrance when we heard footsteps. One of the members of my team shouts out the corniest line I've ever heard, "OK guys I think we've taken enough pictures of the outside of this building." It turned out to be a girl. A girl doing the same thing we were. Her, I, and another member of my party got onto the roof and climbed all the way to the top of the metal structure on the side of the building. Police came at one point, but thanks to radios and teammates on the ground we were able to avoid any contact. The girl we met was seriously brave, she pretty much scouted and lead the way to the top of the structure. After we all got down she showed us some great spots around Burlington. The roof on Smokejacks, the most entertaining fire escape in the world, and tea at her house until 6:15 in the morning.

Oh, and meet the New England Urban Exploration Unit.
