Yeah, I went to shoot there a few months ago and there was a construction crew inside putting up walls and changing the windows and roof. I guess it's better that they make good use of these places rather than tear them down. A.R. was my first exploration.

| | | I was surprised at how much stuff had been moved around in Massey when I was (also) there on Saturday. The arch is now in the back half in what looks like a workshop setup. The burned out chair had its legs removed.. lots of other subtle changes (like the No Trespassing sign is gone from the door). One of the more dynamic sites I've been to.

| | | If I'm not mistaken the old Irwin Toys warehouse/factory is in the same area and it's being converted to condiminiums. I know someone who bought one. It's off Strachan eh? It's probably being converted to condo's or something. [last edit 1/16/2006 2:30 AM by CowboyPenner - edited 1 times]

| | | The Toy Factory Lofts are what is becoming of the Irwin Toy Factory. I wanted to get one, but I wasn't in a position to put the money down yet. They ripped the roof apart because they are adding 3 or 4 floors as part of the development. [last edit 1/16/2006 2:58 AM by yokes - edited 1 times]

| | | Posted by sigma Its nuts what they recently did to the Irwin Toy place. The ripped open the entire top area.
|
...it's in the same area...just down the street I think...as Liberty Village? When I went to the Royal Winter Fair I parked on a side street off Strachan...across from the cop garage...when I left The Fair I left with a lady who'd bought a condo in one of those converted warehouses. I'm sure she said it was in the old Irwin Toy Warehouse which is obviously still under construction.

| | | Heres a couple shots of the old Liberty Street with the Irwin Toy Factory before all the construction and the new road. Took this in 2003.
The Liberty Plant is in the distance. I also looked into getting one of the Toy Factory Lofts but Im not that impressed by the design. Personally i think the Candy Factory Lofts are the best in Toronto. Wish I got in on those when they launched.

| | | Areas like that are so rare these days in Toronto It wasn't just Liberty Village...but also the lakefront, Dupont (i.e. American Standard) and many more. Ah well...

| | | I actually put a cheque down for one of those places. Realized after I signed that the 15% percent deposit would have meant carrying an extra loan of forty five grand while paying a mortgage on my other place for who knows how long. (Renos take longer than they say) Sadly I had to bail out. Then I find out two weeks later that they were accepting five percent down but the only one I could afford was gone. At least they're preserving it not knocking it down. [last edit 1/17/2006 6:17 PM by littlealien - edited 3 times]

Yea, I go by there a bit and was wondering what they were doing to it. Also saw the Toy Loft place they were working on. That general area seems to be under construction. Some pics taken in the fall on the outskirts (kinda crappy):

| | | Great pics by the way, bad news though that facility is actually part of the old INGLIS plant. That location almost all of it was originally a prison believe it or not. The red clay brick building to the south of the Large INGLIS sign that sits besides the Liberty Villiage/INGLIS plant (thought to be Massey Ferguson) was once the Prison Chapel. Once the war broke out John Inglis required more land as he was tasked with making firearms instead of washing machines for the commonwealth. He bought up all the surrounding land before he died and used it mostly for making Browning High Power Handguns, The Boyes Anti Tank Rifle, Bren Guns and if I read correctly naval guns as well. The red clay brick building was then used by INGLIS as a sort of administration facility, then later to store records. An individual by the name of HAHN was tasked with the main logistics of the production of firearms after INGLIS died and he as well bought up more land. The facilty shown in the pics is not Massey Ferguson but INGLIS and has recently been the issue of quite debate in city hall. As usual in Toronto we(at the least the people we elct do) have a careless attitude to our historical sites and allways want to build condos or parking lots on them. Well in this case they(the kind people who pretend to looking out for the good of toronto) almost succeeded and tried to demolish the entire site. Thankfully some people got together and informed these idiots that the site should be dubbed a historical site due to its age and thus the red clay brick building and the AR WILLIAMS site still stand much to there dismay. The other structures like the ones we photographed the interior of might get bulldozed but its still being argued over. Finally we are taking our historical military contributions to the war/s seriously and the people are embracing it thankfully. There might just be hope for the INGLIS remains and its possible it might be allowed to remain. In the next few months I am going to be meeting with the family of Veronica Foster (see bren gun girl int he photos) to get some more information on her. If I get more photos I'll post them on the site. mrclark

| | | Just to be sure, you're saying that the building marked Massey on this map is actually Inglis and was never used at any time by Massey?
