| Entry: Sourcing (River/Creek/Brook/Stream) originally posted by jB
[last edit 1/6/2006 4:47 PM by jB - edited 2 times]
| A method of exploration that involves following a river or creek upstream to its source. The stream may be 'sourced' by either wading through it or by walking along its banks. Sourcing (or more commonly, "Tracing") is often navigationally easy as the river or creek provides a steady route to follow. However, a sourcing/tracing expedition may be long and physically demanding depending on the terrain encountered. It often requires a number of skills including mountaineering, outdoor survival, and creative wayfinding. The sport appears to have started in Taiwan and seems to be spreading slowly throughout other Pacific countries, though one article suggests that it came to Taiwan from Italy. For obvious reasons, wet, hilly areas are often the best for this type of activity Although usually referred to as "River Tracing", a number of alternate names have also appeared including "Creek Tracing", "Brook Tracing", "Stream Tracing", and "Sourcing".
