Sigma Chi, College Park, MD:
History: I found out that people confuse Sigma Chi with itself, there’s talk about a frat house that was closed because it lost it’s charter and then that there’s one that had caught on fire. Truth be told it was closed in Feb. 2002 due to violating Greek Life Policies (no further details.) And there was fire in the building on December 17th, 2004. The fire started in the basement, on the left side of the building (as far as I can tell from the scorch marks.) According to reports, the basement was mostly consumed, which may raise concerns of structural integrity. Supposedly it’s set for demolition (as noted in Winter of 2004), it’s now 2006.
Preliminary Notes: Although it's not complicated to get out there, I found that I got lost really easily. We went out twice. The location is out in the public, in close proximity to residential buildings (occupied by students) or close to other public buildings, a recreation center.
Photographing the outside is easy enough. People look at you strangely, and might talk to you, but otherwise no one seems alarmed or concerned by people walking around the building.
There’s a fence that is around the building, but is also 75% down. All the lower windows are boarded up, all the windows are shattered and the grounds are sprinkled with shards of glass and other debris. Heavy gloves and clothes are a must. There’s a fire escape, the bottom rungs separated from the rest and some nylon ropes that dangle from some of the upper windows. The Chi, on the house has been removed, not sure why.
