Some people's kids
entry by Explorer H

I am still amazed at the laziness of some of the students who come in to my program each year. Sometimes, I get three, or four outstanding kids. They are always here, in uniform (that'll have to wait), and they work hard. I had several who went on to art school and are loving every hard working minute of it. You have to work hard in art school to hit deadlines. In art school its a big fat 0, zero, nadda, nuttin' hunny, if you do not make the cut off. I don't have that luxury of completely failing kids, well to a degree anyway.
If you show up to my class, and use your time wisely, even if you aren't the most creative, you WILL pass my class. It's a guarantee. If you are late, absent, do not hit deadlines, and waste boatloads of time, you will FAIL my class. It's that simple.
Yesterday, two students needed to film something for the 30 second TV commercial spot I had assigned them the previous week. So I look over, and they have this little point-and-click digital camera ready to start shooting. I said, "hey, what are ya doin?" "We have a $3,000+ Canon XL-1 on a tripod with wheels and you are gonna shoot with that!?" In my head I'm, thinking, "what a friggin bunch of lazy dumbasses."
So, they get the shots they needed and then wasted the rest of the morning. They had plenty of time to get the clips off the camera and into their clips bins ready to edit and manipulate.
This morning they came in and proceeded to waste 15 more minutes before the guy asks me, "did you get that video off for us?" I was stunned. I said in a very annoyed, pissed off tone, "Do I have to hold your hands the rest of the year, or do you think you can get off your butts and get it yourselves?" The guy replies, "we don't know how to, you never told us." I said, "you wasted over an hour and a half to come to that conclusion, all you had to do was come to me in the first place, and besides that, it's not very difficult, I didn't see any attempt whatsoever from either of you to even try!"
Well the guy was pretty pissed. He has s crappy attitude anyhow, and this only made him mumble more BS under his breath.
You know, I am not here to hold these kids' hands. This is a bunch of crap, the stuff they say. I wanna grab them by the shirt, tell them to quit being so friggin lazy, use your time wisely, and try something first before you bother me with it. These kids wouldn't last a day in the biz, let alone art school.

You remind me a lot of my History teacher last year . . . yeah kids are lazy. He actually ended up quitting. He was one of the only teachers I had who wouldn't give kids some "extra help" (like when someone's failing and the teacher gives them tons of extra credit so that they pass). I'm glad to see another good teacher, there are far too few these days.
