I was supposed to meet up with Horus and his dad today for some draining, but the weather was unpleasant (heavy rain), so that didn't work out. I swung by Wetnut 29 and Emmet Street drains though... they were both only an inch or two above normal water level. Probably not worth the risk though.
So, while I was out and about, I decided to look for a drain outfall that I was pretty sure was behind a shopping center. I parked at the shopping center, and walked around back and into the woods. I immediately stumbled across an old spring house - a stone hut of sorts, recessed into the hillside, with a spigot sticking out of the wall. Kinda neat.
From here, I climbed down the hillside and into the creekbed. Following the creekbed downstream, I passed through a semi-ghetto apartment complex, and ended up in a marshy stormwater retention area. From the other side of the wetland I could hear the splashing of water - success! I had found a 5' RCP storm drain. I climbed in, flicked on my flashlight, and headed upstream. After about 100', I decided to head out and return another day (remember, it's raining heavily this whole time).
Exiting the drain, I headed back through the marshy area and followed a trail downstream. Eventually I came to a fallen tree across a creek that came in from the side. I followed this creek upstream, until I found another 5' RCP storm drain. This one dumped into a VERY deep pool, and was surrounded by thick-ass briars. By surrounded, I mean that you couldn't see the drain entrance through all the briars that were fallen down over it. But, I slowly forged my way through all the briars and into the drain.
This one didn't go too far before it shrunk to 4' or so, and a pair of smaller pipes dumped in from the sides. I headed back out the way I came, vowing again to return when it's not so rainy.
So... two new drains, one of which probably doesn't suck. And I know where at least two more are, which means that I need to get off my ass and explore them.
