Large pictures. < on 11/9/2005 6:14 AM >   Hi everyone, This is my first post on these boards, so if I am doing something wrong or posting something that is not considered UE, and/ or is inappropriate, please let know. Anyways, there is an abandoned limestone quarry mine in the town of cool, on the outskirts of auburn california - where me and my friends grew up. We've been visiting this mine for a few years now, which was opened in the late 1800's, and was operational for many, many years afterwards. Just this last weekend, we bought down a camera and a tripod in an attempt to get some open-shutter pictures. After looking at the beautiful pictures posted here, I am sorry that these pictures aren't more artful - but our only objective was to clearly illustrate the sheer size of the place, and the terribly small size of the entrance. It's about a ten foot torso-wide crawl to a gate in which you must skirt to get into the main shaft. Sonia, Cody's girlfriend attempting a feet-first crawl. Once inside, things start to get pretty large. Then they get REALLY large. I have no idea how high the ceiling is in this room, but it has to be close to at least a billion feet. More. MORE! Here's a shot just looking down one of the many hallways. Same. Then, we find the lake. Pictures will never do justice as to just how large this lake is. You can see me off on a distant shore there. More of the lake. Hey, even more of the lake! This is a little raft system someone rigged up, and Sonia, apparently training for the worlds most hardass girlfriend competition, jumped on a pulled herself across. The Crew shots. Cody, the kid behind the camera for most of this trip. Sonia, Cody's main squeeze. Me, that really sweaty kid down in the cave. Carson, my bearded step cousin. Ok, let me get this straight - You haul yourself down this tiny tunnel, into a magical turn of the century quarry and all you can think to vandalize it with is "BASS AUTO ZONE"? So sad... Ah, the main squeeze out. This part is not fun. I mean it, not fun. This just reminds me of John Goodman squeezing out of the earth in Raising Arizona, screaming. OUT! All in all, it was disappointing to see how much garbage was down there - when we had gone there a few years ago, there was garbage - but this time it was obvious someone had a rager down there, with fireworks and all. Thats right, Fireworks. Who in their right mind brings explosive incendiary devices to an abandoned, crumbling, turn of the century limestone quarry? Seriously? Apparently, in the 50's and 60's, it wasn't far from that - my moms horseshoe-er remembers going to dances in there when he was a little kid. They're great. They really convey the entire feeling of "holy ****..." that you get when you walk into someplace really huge or otherwise awe-inspiring. That feeling's the thing I love most about exploring. You're pretty handsome, too (from a straight male's perspective). All i did was look stupid in front of the camera, then post them online . We've been on some absurd missions, one of an abandoned nuclear missile silo - me or cody might post that soon. Man, you have no idea how much i've had to defend those pants. I posted this on another forum, and i had to explain myself in about 10 separate posts. As you can see, it gets a bit dirty crawling into a place like this, and my pants could have been ruined. SO, instead of wearing some nice jeans into the place, i just pulled out my old polyester pants - cause i dont care if they get destroyed or not. Make sense?
