Asbestos, again...

I know there has been several topics concerning asbestos, but I still believe not all of us are aware how dangerous it really is. I have recently explored a lot in a place which, as I later learned, is full of asbestos. The place is an old factory/warehouse, and amongst other insulation, all water pipes are insulated with asbestos. As the pipes are copper, lot of thieves have been tearing the pipes down to sell the copper for little money, and while doing that they have spread the asbestos insulation around.

Couple of days ago I met two of workers (wearing coveralls and respirators) from asbestos cleaning company, who told me that it´s very dangerous to walk around there, as there is a lot of asbestos dust all over the place. As asbestos fibers are very light, just by walking through a room which has asbestos dust on the floor you will lift the dust up, and it takes very long time for it to settle back. So it is very easy to expose yourself to it without even noticing it.

As I'm not that good writing in english, I'm not going to write more about this, so please learn about asbestos so you will not expose yourself to it without suitable protection.

It is very deceptive as it will not hurt you instantly, so please be aware!!

Thanks for the info. I didn't know people ripped apart insulation like that just to make a few bucks. But that's the very reason why I bought a respirator the other day Menards. My friends said that I'm just paranoid and maybe I am overly-cautious in some instances, but I'm really not a fan of cancer either.

I read about people stealing manhole covers for scrapmetal on Urbex.org

Asbestos is very dangerous! At my grandparent's house (we don't go to often as it's 600 miles away), they have a pool table in the basement, but the pipes in the basement are covered in asbestos. When I was younger and we lived near there, I'd sneak down there all the time. It scares me to think what I was exposed to down there. Since then they've wrapped the asbestos pipes with stuff so that the asbestos doesn't leak as much, but some of my stupid cousins poke the pipes until asbestos pours out and then run away for fun. Morons.

Hmmm that scares me, today we had high winds and some of the insulation came off the roof of our 40+ year old school, and my stupid friend picked it up and waived it around. I know for a fact that they used asbestos in our school because last year they had an asbestos unit come out and remove some from a room that was being worked on. They wore full body suits. Makes me wonder what I'm being exposed to.

Our school has asbestos in some of the rooms, I think it's been cleaned out in most of the place. Except for the supply room (it has a "Warning Asbestos" sign on the door) and possibly the gym teacher's office (the teacher once accidentaly poked the pipe and powder floated down). That's what they get for making us run the mile a gazillion times until everyone passed the state standard time (it's like 10 minutes ).

If you're entering a building with unknown asbestos levels, what are good precautions to take? Will a standard dust mask even protect against asbestos?

As far as I know, "normal" dustmask/respirator does not filter out asbestos.

For example, 3M has filters made specifically to filter out asbestos:

More info about that particular 3M 2091 P100 filter:

As far as protection goes basically you want an N100 mask, also the more people you go with, the more likely you are to become exposed as people will tend to inadvertently kick up more asbestos.

N95's, which are used for protection against TB and other semi small particles, and are the more common mask you will find at say a construction site or hospital, wont work. Dust masks dont work either.

Gas masks should work, and any respirator/surgical mask with the N100 rating should be fine.

Back in the day, my grandfather was in the navy on board a ship with the asbestos literally falling from the celling, he has Asbestosis now, he was just diagnosed with it a few years ago, and he was exposed during WWII, so you better protect yourself.

It's bad stuff, and you can find it in unexpected places. My dad had to go get checked because where he works he comes into contact with it on a regular basis. BUt is he an electrician or contractor?? Nope...he works for CSX in the railyards, and the brakes of the trains give off asbestos dust as they wear down.

So, better safe than sorry I always say. Besides, there is typically mold and other nastiness floating in the air, so why not save yourself some respiratory distress and get one!

Thanks for the mask recommendations. Not nearly as expensive as I'd have thought.

Just to give everybody a chill, the brake pads in basically all cars were chock full of asbestos for many years. The pad dust was churned up as they wore away, and was deposited all over the car. Ever changed a tire on a 1970's automobile? You have been exposed. If you live in a house that was built before the late 1960's, you have been exposed. Dead yet?

On a second note, my younger brother was the HAZMAT manager for a government installation for many years, and his quote to me on asbestos last night was this: "Yes asbestos is bad stuff, but dont' be a paranoid nut. Don't roll around in it, dont' eat it, and try not to kick up huge clouds of asbestos dust when you are walking in it. If you are going to be a dumbass and make a habit of being exposed to asbestos daily, get a good mask. Otherwise, limited exposure on a once or twice a year basis is no sweat. You have a better chance of getting killed in a liquor store robbery."

There you go. The whole world lived with asbestos daily for many years, and we didnt' all come down with asbestosis. I have personally never concerned myself with it. The house I live in was built in 1912, and has asbestos based floor tiles in two rooms, and asbestos in the paint and insulation. Somehow I manage to sleep at night. The two packs of cigarettes a day are going to get me first!

I went into an abandoned building once, entering through the window. Spent a good amount of time exploring inside, and on the way out I noticed some red warning tape on the ground (like the police line tape) that said: "ASBESTOS - DO NOT ENTER". After we got outside I noticed a huge warning sign that detailed the asbestos and other dangers in the building.

Anyway, my question is, how dangerous is short term exposure to asbetos like this?

You should be fine. It's more of a long-term exposure thing. If you were, say, a builder in the 60s, then you should be worried. But if you just walked through, you should be OK. It most likely did get on your clothes though, and depending on how long ago it was it may still be in your home. Did you see dust everywhere, that when stepped on kicked up into clouds? There's a hole in the wall at my school, and you can see asbestos on the pipes, falling off of the paints. Same with the mechanical rooms (which I've snuck into several times for UE).

yea, more then likely only long term exposure will do any harm, my grandfather who got sick from asbestos spent months onboard the ship, literarily being exposed everyday.

Anyone know how they test a person for asbestosis? Id guess a chest x ray, but I dont know...

Not necesarily, many houses older than that don't use asbestos. I have lived in 2 houses, one built in 1909 and one in 1910, and neither one had any asbestos (or at least inspections didn't turn up any). Lead paint though...

I'm not to sure of this. but one time some friends and I went into this building that was being cleared of asbestos. all of us ended up with runny noses. does asbestos do that, or are there any chemical used to remove asbestos that can do that.

I think there is a date, I'm not sure when, that pre-dates asbestos being used as an insulator. Buildings older than x will not have asbestos. I believe there is a window in time when its usefulness was discovered but not its side-effects. Anybody have additional research to support this?

Asbestos won't give you a runny nose. You won't even notice it's effects until enough has accumulated under the right conditions for you to get lung cancer years down the line. I'm not sure if any chemicals would cause that either.
