I want to buy a headlamp for draining (my 4 cell D Mag sucks), and am curious which is the best brand, or the best bang for the buck. I'm pretty much limited to under $100, and under $50 is very preferable.

If you want to go totally cheap, head to Wal-mart, Lowes or Target and get a three-mode, threeAAA Rayovac headlamp. I've used them and they are okay. Not great fr long distance but you've got two colors of LED and an incandescent bulb for long distance work. Dick's Sporting Goods has allot of decent lamps,I believe they have some of the low end Black Diamond models.

For good reviews on many types of headlamp go to:
http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews_index/reviews_index_headlamps.htm

The highest rated headlamp on that site only costs fourty bucks. (Princeton Tec EOS)

For up to $50-100, you can do pretty well. I highly recommend finding one with a 1-watt or 3-watt Luxeon LED, and current regulation (for a more constant output over the life of the batteries).

My personal favorite headlamp is the Pelican 2630 LED - I modified mine with a better Luxeon LED for improved brightness and beam quality. It has current regulation, and three brightness levels. Amazon has it for $42.95.

I have the Princeton Tec EOS, and it's a very tough and well-designed headlamp (1-watt LED, current regulation). BUT, the beam is kinda funky - it's all spot, without much spill beam (so it's great for seeing things at a distance, but not the ground at your feet).

Blue Ridge Mountain Sports has the best headlamp selection in town, including some decent Black Diamond and Petzl headlamps.

Like Random said, I guess it depends on the situation. Freak, grit, and I got into a discussion about tunneling and how much light you really need for a drain. Freak's preference was to be able to see down the length of a tunnel, which would call for a brighter and ultimately, a more expensive light. Granted, I haven't tried out many headlamps, but Rayovac is CHEAP and provides me with enough light to see what's in front and to the side of me. Plus ya gotta love that feel as you go down, not exactly knowing what's in front of you.

Yeah the Rayovac "Twin Cities Special" is a good lamp ... good battery life, and like WD said cheap. It's kind of fun to have a lamp that doesn't light all the way down long tunnels - makes you more likely to explore them. ~Grit.

I use a Brinkman headlamp. It has 2 LEDs and a red light for being extra sneaky. I find that the headlamp is useful for when I need my hands free and for illuminating the tunnel in my immediate proximity. I use a 2 AA or a 2D Maglite to supplement the headlamp and illuminate the tunnel ahead.

A good thing about a twelve dollar headlamp is that you can lose it/destroy it and not have to worry about it.

From what I've read so far I'll go with the Pelican, or if I can't afford it, the Princeton Tec EOS Headlamp. I like how they're not built in with a hard-hat. Makes them much easier to store, and you can always strap them to a hard-hat if necessary.

Yep the RayOVac special works great, cheap to replace too. red & white LED's and a bright white spot make them useful too. Most Twin Cities explorers use them and those that dont usually convert in a short time.

It's small, lightweight, have a red filter that you can flip on and off as you want, use two AAA batteries and it's damn bright!!! (4 white LED)

Paid about 40CND for it

Get the rayovac. That way, when you lose it, you won't be pissed off. It only costs like twelve dollars and it has a red led, which is very useful. I mean, what more do you need?

What does one do with a red LED? How is it helpful?

You can look at stuff under red light for a long time and still be able to see in darkness. But bright (white) lights cause your eyes to be too used to the light, and it takes a while for them to readjust.

And while we're on the subject, does red light do anything for infrared detectors/cameras? I know when we go through them we're always on red mode, but I'm not sure it makes a whole hell of a lot of difference. I'd imagine the cameras would pick up the white of a regular LED/incandescent, but it would pick up our body heat just as well, would it not?

You also might consider the new Petzl Tikka XP, which is more powerful than previous Tikka models.

I'm sold on the Petzl MYO 5 headlamp. I do a lot of mines, and this thing is the answer. It has both LED bulbs for long duration, and a halogen for max brightness. It uses standard AA batteries, instead of some of the exotics that can be hard to find. It has 5 LED's instead of the 3 of the older models. It isn't guaranteed waterproof, but I have been really wet, and had no problems with the light. The only problem with it is that it run better than $160, and lots of folks don't want to spend that much. I say it was money well spent, of course I have a good job!

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Crazy. I've gone, on a rainy night, with nothing but a dollar store single AA night light. It illuminated about 3 feet infront of me. I can't stress how unsafe I felt.

Anyways, nice thread. I've been after a headset for some time. Those Petzl ones look nice. I'll have to inspect them.

The Petzls are great both the Myo & the Tikka
LED last for age and give enough light when your eyes adjust
I happily use a Petzl Tikka or an old Petzl Zoom for all my draining...
Wouldn't want to rely on one for Mines or similar expos...but in those circumstances just sling one around your neck as a back up!

Has anybody ever tried out one of these Pelicans?

http://www.pelican.../2680_headsup.html

It's got what they call a "recoil LED" that is mounted like a search light - facing back at the reflector. They boast 100% light efficiency on this design. Does anybody own this headlamp? Seems like a nice unit! ~Grit.

I believe that the filter/red leds changes the wavelength of the light, red being a shorter wave it doesnt travel quite as far, and its better for your eyes at night.

you can actually make an infrared camera using an old webcam and some film negatives if your interested, then you can test out the red led thing for yourself

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/geoff.johnson2/IR/

I did it and it does work, thought you guys might find it interesting, I recommend making one, you cant really use it for much but they are cool, if you need help feel free to IM/PM me

BTW, I find the cheap Walmart head lamps work just fine, thats what I use.
