| | | | Combat boots anyone? < on 9/21/2005 6:18 PM >
| | | Just wondering, What kind of footware do you all use for UE? I myself used Ridge Air-Tacs, up untill last week when I got my Bates Ultra-Lites I'm a huge fan of combat boot, not only are they comphy as hell, but great for climbing a rope (at least the way we do it) and the lovely shank in case you step on a nail it won't go through yer foot!

| | | I wear Gripfast boots. They're very similar to combat boots; Gripfast used to manufacture some boots for the British military, if I remember correctly. They're steel-toed and have metal plates in the soles.

| | | Yea, I love my jungle boots, they have that spike protect thing so stepping on a nail or pungi stick won't suck. I almost went with the tactical urban boots, but they have really light soles, so there not too good for walking through woods, but excellent for sneaking around an asylum. My group and I never explore without our boots, i cant tell you how many times i was thankful i wore them, plus they look so hardcore.

| | | Altama combat boots; the "boot, water and mildew resistant, direct molded sole". Accept no substitutes, especially not the cheap knockoffs, though that's true for most footwear; the real deal (tropical combat boot, Bates Enforcer) is rather better than the fake (chinese-made jungle boots, anything from K-Mart or Wal-Mart). The Canadian army's black leather combat boot is pretty darned nice, but heavy; the low-top garrison boot, um, sucks. The old-school Viet Nam-era U.S. black leather (M1968) combat boot kicked ass, but it seems really hard to find 'em anymore in good condition without dry rot. The USAF flight-crew boot is OK, but heavy; the cheap asian knockoffs suck monkey balls. USN flight deck boots are pretty nifty (and steel toed) and can be resoled, but are understandably hard to find, there only being so many aircraft carriers, and all that. Unless you're in the desert, any and all desert combat boots absolutely suck. Watch out for U.S. mil-surplus boots that look like a cross between old-style combat boots and engineer boots, but are taller and have 19-22 eyelets and hooks, depending on size; these are engineer's pole-climbing boots, and are neither meant for, nor suitable for, walking in, though I understand they're favored by some poor sods who have to handle barbed wire and razor tape a lot. Russian boots, which are pretty common as surplus in the EU, suck; old East German officer's riding-style boots are very nice, very comfortable, and damn sexy looking; the enlisted version... isn't. I'm unimpressed by the tall UK combat boot, especially for the premium prices they go for, and have never seen the low version in person. There are a lot of "next generation" USMC, or at least USMC-style, boots showing up on the surplus markets these days; aside from their being ugly as sin, I'm skeptical of their quality... I've worn combat boots of one sort or another daily for the last twelve years or so... I don't even own a pair of sneakers anymore.

Yea.. I got a pair of vans like 6 or 7 years ago, I wore them for about two weeks in gym class and I haven't worn shoes since.. (was forced to buy them for gym class in HS, but I bitched at the teachers enough where they just let me wear my boots to shut me up)

| | | Bought several pairs of Reebok Tallahassee Hikers a few years ago, and they are the answer for me. Ankle high, lug sole with an aggressive tread, but they are made of light canvas, so they dry out quickly and weigh very little.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | Combat boots are the choice of the champions in this matter, but I've also had a lot of success with good ol' Chuck Taylors. If the terrain isn't too rough, a pair of Chucks can't be beat for comfort. Plus, they're cheap, so you can mess 'em up real bad and have no regrets.

| | | I agree that combat boots can be very efficient in what you're trying to do. But the use of the word 'combat' reminds me of something. Does it seem that people tend to get all militant when they get into things involving groups or "crews" (i.e. "Urban Invaders")? Paintball, Aggressive in-line skating, Counter-Strike (or any fps team game), xHardcoreXkidsX, street gangs are just some of the tightly-knit clans that I have encountered but there are many like these. I know this isn't necessarily the thread to bring this up, but just the use of the word 'combat' in the UE sense (or any sense) weirds me out. Before I got into UE, I did a lot of hiking and my brother found me a pair of these in a dumpster:
And then when I still worked at REI, there was some sales spokesman there to talk about their Superfeet insoles and for listening to him we got a free pair of these:
Combat boots might work for some, but I'm really satisfied with my pair. Could use some new laces.. though.

| | | This has been gone over several times. Combat boots are great, because the ease of buying them, and the durability of "MOST" combat boots. However if your being sneaky combat boots arent the way to go. Tabi or high end boots are far better. Sometimes walmart has great boots with metal shanks in the bottom.
wackodood - I cant believe I read all that. If you get the idea of scary people from "combat" and UE then trespassing must sound like mugging to you. Id suggest getting a paper bag so you dont hyper ventilate. Hope you dont go to a protest and feel a little militant with hippy kids and combat boots around. We dont want you to nervous.
