Can someone explain to me how to climb up and down a rope? Does it require lots of physical strength?

It's easier if the rope is against a vertical surface or has knots at regular intervals, but technically it's possible just by inching your way up. Hold the rope in your hands, then bring your feet as high as you can and squeeze the rope between them. Move your hands up, then feet, etc.

Try a Prusik hitch around the rope with a loop for your foot to cinch it down so you can alternately pull-cinch-reach and grab. You can scale any rope, cable, pole or circular tubing imaginable. Fast.

The easiest method is to wear a climbing harness, and use prussic knots (knots which only slide one way) and foot loops. The technique is kind of hard to explain, and if you screw up your knots you can get injured or stuck on the rope. If you're going to do this you should either take a technical climbing course (often available at local gyms for a small fee), or find a climber to teach you.

Next easiest is to tie knots every few feet, and use these to get a better grip as you climb. The rope will spin and you'll spend a lot of time dangling from your hands trying to get your feet on the next knot, so make sure to practice.

If you've got the strength for it, you can just climb up the thing commando-style: http://www.powerat...leropeclimbing.htm

For me it's easy, I have a lot of upper body strength and I don't use my legs at all.. I let the legs just dangle and I use my arms and just pull myself up.. I was always quick with climbing ropes.. Remember back in the day when you had to climb the ropes to the roof in gym class? Everybody used both legs, and arms and I'd just blow by them. I'm also pretty light so I'd suggest going with the knots in the rope and using both your legs and arms and taking your time.

I've always used my knees and ankles to pinch the rope while i reached up. I'd do a pullup with my arms and then re-pinch the rope with my legs. Knots along the way make it easier. I'll have to look into the sliding knot idea, it sounds like a good one.

Am I the only one using ascenders?
I used to use Petzl's but they were too big to lug around. Now I use Ushba's from Russia and, if travelling light, Gibbs work well but Tibloc's are tiny and work very well. I set mine up Texas Leapfrog style which allows your legs to do most of the work.

I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.

I haven't tried climbing one for years, perhaps I could do now better than back in the day at school, although we never had to climb them to gym roof. I should try to get some rope..

I get a lot of stuff cheap on Ebay.

If you get a tibloc, which are a single piece of metal that uses a carabinier as a cam, they only cost like $20 new at any climbing store.

Nope they rock.
Depends on how far a climb though. 20 feet or more ascenders are the way to go. Less than that though and I have a handy rope ladder.

Instead of using a prusik, you can also use a petzl grigri which can also then be used as your rappel and belay device. Definitely handy, and they are also autolocking for extra safety!

I have a friend (another rigger) who's in to minimalism. On shorter climbs,he ties his keys (Not something I'd risk) to a piece of tie line, throws them over a beam, pulls his rope over, ties a bowline in the end, stands in the bowline and pulls himself up sorta leapfrogging. Pretty cool!

if you seriously can't do a push up then i would not suggest rope climbing at any considerable height. rope climbing is a lot of upper body strength. and if you seriously can't do a push up, i would recommend you start trying to strengthen up, i don't think that's healthy. besides, it can only improve your UE if you are more fit (easier to climb rope, climb fences, climb walls, run from certain things, etc.)

Climbing has alot more to do with the legs then it does the arms in my opinion. I mostly just use my hands to balance well im climbing anything thats not rope.

If the rope has knots, it's like a more advanced version of a ladder. It just requires a stronger grip and more balance. if it's over/near a wall, hold the rope with your hands and walk up the wall. If it's that bastard blue nylon rope, wear gloves, cause it burns you like hell if you slip.

Something I did with a friend as an experiment was to get a grappling hook, shackle a small pulley to it, and throw it up so the hook caught, then use the pulley to run up one end of a rope ladder. tie off the rope to something heavy, or just have the heavier guy hold the end, and then one person climbs the ladder to fasten it more securely. It's way too much kit and a pain in the arse to set up quickly so it's no practical use while exploring at all, but I figured it might be useful if you need to move a large number of people who may not be too hot at climbing a rope.
