Ellesmere Creamery: exploration with pictures (England)

Hi all,

I recently re-visited one of my favourite exploration locations and took a load of pictures to share. I've compiled the pictures into a "virtual tour" with captions. First, here are the details of the site:

Location: Ellesmere Creamery, Wharf Road, Ellesmere, Shropshire, England.
Owner: Burbury Investments.
Status: Abandoned. To be demolished if planning permission for a new shopping mall is granted.
Access: Easy. Just walk in. There may be a very infrequent security patrol, but I'm not sure.
Hazards: Unsafe floors and roofs. Deep pits filled with water. Broken glass.

Details: This was one of the first sites I discovered as an explorer back in 1995, and it remains one of my favourites. Ellesmere Creamery was built in the 1930s to serve the many dairy farms in the region. The creamery became part of United Dairies and then Dairy Crest, but it was closed in 1989. When closed it employed nearly 300 people - probably a good third of the town's workforce - so it was a major blow to the town. The site occupies about 50 acres, of which perhaps 15-20 acres is covered by buildings. Much of the equipment was removed from the creamery when it closed, but larger pieces still remain. In 1995 most of the buildings were boarded up and locked, but it was still a fascinating site. Now vandals have cracked open the buildings and regrettably caused a great deal of damage, but explorers can wander freely. This really is an excellent site if you live in the West Midlands or Wales. You could easily spend a whole day exploring the site. I hope people enjoy it!

Now for the virtual tour:

I'll also attach a few pictures to this post. I'd be pleased to know what people think. Do feel free to send me a private message if you're planning a trip to the creamery.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks for the feedback! Here's another photo which Nobody might like. I missed it when uploading photos earlier. See my link to the Webshots album for all 78 photos of the site.

Well, if you're ever in Shropshire drop me a message. I'll most likely be paying a return visit to the site. The same goes for anyone else who's in the area.

Well done! I love pictures of plants growing inside buildings.

(The resolution is too small to see what kind of plant it is. I'm a very bad amateur botanist - even with good resolution I probably couldn't tell.)

Hi all,

I went back to the creamery again today. This time I explored the buildings on the far side of the canal. The canal warehouse is pretty well boarded up, and I could only get into one empty room. The largest buildings turn out to be the depot which serviced the creamery's lorries. Not too much left, but still worth a look. The last building on the far side is a derelict house. The only way in was through a broken window and it looked dull, so I skipped it.

I went back and grabbed the ladder to investigate the tower and that was much more interesting. It turns out to be lift winding gear at the top, but the lift shaft itself has been converted to storage cupboards and a hallway. The lift machinery is huge and old, probably installed when the building was new in the early 1930s. Definitely worth a look if you visit the site.

I had a look at uair01's plant too. I think it's a small Buddleia but I'm not certain. There are many Buddleia and Elder bushes on the site.

How deep are those 'deep water' pits?

I pushed a pole into the tank containing the rusty pipes, as shown in my picture. There's about a 5 ft wall around the tank, and the stick went down a few feet into the water, so I can safely say the tank is more than 8 feet deep. It would be hard to fall into this tank, but it would be equally hard to get out if you did. Some other tanks, like the one with the blue metal guards around it, look much deeper. There's also some kind of filtration tank which is shallow at one end and deep at the other. The hopper shown in my (poor) photo is more than 15 feet deep.

In short, I don't know exactly how deep the water is, but I can say it's deeper than I'd want to fall in to!

Glad you liked the pictures of the site.

Just got my pictures of the lift machinery developed. There is a hefty 3 hp @ 700 rpm electric motor driving a 50:1 (I think) worm and wheel gear through an electromagnetic brake. Also note the handle for turning the worm gear by hand to lower the lift car in an emergency. The cables, lift car and guide rails have all gone, but it's still fascinating if you like engineering.

Here are the pictures:
