The last time I attended a venue in the Gardens was in 1999, shortly after the Leafs left it.

Um, a venue is not an event. MLG is a venue.

I don't want to see MLG turned in a Loblaws. I lived near the Gardens for 4 months. I could see the Gardens from my bedroom window. I may be an Ottawa fan but the Gardens will always have a place in my heart. I really think they should do what it was built to do,make it an arena for the Marlies or whatever. Theres alot of things besides Loblaws that they could do with it. I'm routing for it to be an arena or at least a concert venue again.

Well I went down to check out the scene at MLG last night. Yes. They had a couple ryder trucks there. I also spoke to one of the workers and he told me they were talking stuff out.. Aparantly they have cleaned the place out and taken everything out of there (the kitchens and other stuff). There was a shareholders meeting there yesterday. So they had lots of chairs and displays up. I was also fortunate enough to hang around front in the the afternoon and see in where the door got opened.. The lobby is sparkling clean. The arena itself was lit up(for the meeting of course) and from what I could see was VISIBLY very clean One thing that stood out to me was the north end reds. Very clean, very bright, very presentable.. They had a gold curtain hanging on the end wall were the zamboni used to come out.. And aparantly the stage was setup there.. It was a sight to see.. I hadn't seen the inside of MLG lit up so well or so clean looking since the last time I was there for an event. Over the years I'd dropped by and been able to see into the bowl area from the street and could see in, but it was considerably dimmer than yesterday.. Hopefully they maintain the place and sell it.

Atleast the outside will stay the same..... Yankee Stadium is getting tear down.

as a huge baseball fan i hate to inform you the yankee stadium babe ruth played in was torn down in the 70s, the only thing about the present stadium an dwhere the babe played is the outside wall. even the field is 2 feet lower. so i will not mourn the loss of yankee stadium like i am already mourning the imminent loss of tiger stadium.

As far as the bastardization of places like MLG look what happened to the montreal forum.

it went from this to

molson put a non competition clause in the sale, the building could not be used as a concert venue or ice rink

I know that they still dont have a permit for interior demo (havent even submitted one yet) so as of right now there still isnt any plans to start the construction.

When they had the story on CTV I herd that they had two permits one that was approved for minor changes and the other one that needs to be approved the one for the major.

I should buy some stock for Loblaws so I can get inside MLG.

I am sure there are a lot of dirty areas still I bet they just clean what was necessary.

Well perhaps i havent seen the hole video on CTV. But i have a pretty solid contact with the city who has told me for the past 6 months that no permits have been submitted for interior demo. They did submit the permit and had it approved for the exterior demo and construction (why there is not a light on carlton) so maybe thats the one that they where referring too.

Nobody wants to see it turned into a Loblaws. However, when the process began for proposals by developers, the choices were basically Condos, Parking Lot or Loblaws. The Loblaws proposal is the only one that would retain the same basic appearance of the building, so given the alternatives, Loblaws is the best option.

That said, I would love to see it restored and used as an arena for minor leagues and that kind of thing. It was every kid's dream when I was a wee one to play a game at the Gardens. It would be great if they teamed up with Ryerson to use it for sports education, but I don't see that happening as there's no $$ in it.

Ryerson actually wants to get into it, its just that when sold MLSE wouldnt allow an ice rink of any size in the arena, so they where squeezed out. Both Melynk and Ryerson had plans that you keep both the quality of the exterior and the spirit of the game inside with an arena.
The Home Depot was another finalist, but they would have done pretty much the same thing that Loblaws has done.

I was extremely lucky and grateful to play twice on the gardens' ice. The Timmy Tyke tournament used to play its final games there, and it was the biggest tournament to us kids when we were playing. Loved that place, miss it like no other arena. Memories ....

The area around MLG can't support an arena like that any longer. All the parking lots are condos, local street traffic is WAY up, and needed transit infrastructure's been built up elsewhere. I also don't think the gay village misses the vague sense of unease that used to hang in the air once Leafs games let out.

It may not be the best solution possible, but at least they're not tearing it down or punching giant holes (nods to Shawn W.) in the walls to make Hockey Lofts. A grocery store is a fairly egalitarian end; we all eat after all. And it's not as if we didn't spend millions on a new, state of the art arena built in the shell of the old Postal Distribution centre (what must Canada Post fans have thought?!).

While I love that Toronto is starting to get serious about preserving its architectural heritage (sort of), I'm not that interested in living in a frozen-in-time mausoleum. If we can't use these buildings for their original purpose, we need to come up with new and relevant ways to use them. Leaving them to stand empty while we argue about what used to be - doesn't really further any goal. The longer MLG stands empty and useless, the easier it becomes to level it.

Your first choice might not be a Maple Leaf Gardens Loblaws, but do you want a North Yorkian stuccoed faux-chateau (chatfaux?) standing on it's roof?

Any one know if the paperwork states that they can't play "ice hockey" specifically? If so, they could play roller hockey...
