So long Apache? A better, faster, more secure server that's easier to install and administer, and comes with many more features including out-of-the-box ASP/PHP support, SNMP support for monitoring, etc etc... Is now free.

Aduna Autofocus
http://aduna.biz/p...tofocus/index.html
Desktop search engine and much more (search your PDF/DOC/TXT/HTML files, GRAPHICALLY visualize document relationships, index your IMAP email accounts...)

1) It's from a more trustworthy company in a country with real privacy and data protection laws.

2) It doesn't connect to any networks. It doesn't require any web browser or anything extra to access it. It doesn't install a hidden webserver on your machine. Google sends information back to Google...

3) AutoFocus supports Windows 98/ME/2000/XP, Mac OSX, Linux, and Solaris natively. Google supports only Windows 2000/Xp.
http://www.informi...tLinks/table3.html

4) It does not index things such as emails or web history whereas Google indexes everything.
http://www.informi...tLinks/table2.html

5) It has native PDF support; Google requires a PDF plugin.
http://www.informi...tLinks/table2.html

6) It supports Office documents created by versions of Office lower than Office 2000 - Google does not. It also indexes RTF documents - Google does not.
http://www.informi...tLinks/table2.html

7) Graphical representation of relationships between searches (Google returns text results only).
http://aduna.biz/p...query-answer-2.png

8) Manual indexing. You choose what to index, where the index is stored, if you want to exclude things, etc... Google indexes everything by default, automatically (and GDS auto-indexes in the background, running all the time for days instead of just one large indexing session and then small incremental updates).

9) The ability to connect to IMAP accounts to index them (optional)

10) It's free. It's fast. It's simple. It works flawlessly on 500,000+ files.

11) It also indexes metadata (want to search for x file your wrote about x within the last month? Simple.).

12) It even gives you keywords based on the data you enter to help make your search more precise through a drop-down menu AUTOMATICALLY.

13) The Aduna MetaData Server middleware is also free. http://aduna.biz/p...aserver/index.html http://aduna.biz/p...s/architecture.png

CenterICQ
http://konst.org.ua/centericq/
Text-Mode multi-IM Client for all OSes.

"Centericq is a text mode menu- and window-driven IM interface that supports the ICQ2000, Yahoo!, AIM, IRC, MSN, Gadu-Gadu and Jabber protocols."

Screenshot - http://konst.org.u...ericq/screenshot/7

I recommend doing what I did, which is making a simple batch file that calls a link that wraps the launch of CenterICQ in Console ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/console/ - A transparent command prompt for Windows I've mentioned earlier in this thread ) so you get a stable alpha-transparent on-the-fly-configurable (you can reload the XML config on the fly if you change the tint, for example) text-based IM client in less than 8MB ram including the transparent shell.

http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Pretty much an anything to anything converter. Here's what they say on their site:

SUPER © Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer. A GUI to ffmpeg, MEncoder, mplayer, x264, mppenc, ffmpeg2theora & the theora/vorbis RealProducer plugIn.

If you need a simple, yet very efficient tool to convert (encode) or play any Multimedia file, without reading manuals or spending long hours training, then SUPER © is all you need. It is a Multimedia Encoder and a Multimedia Player, easy-to-use with 1 simple click.
You have to navigate your way to the download page, there is a link near the bottom of each page until you get there. I use this program all the time, it really comes in handy.

I can think of at least two I didn't see mentioned whilst skimming the thread. The first is sketchup, a free alternative to Adobe Illustrator by google [there is a pro version of course, but considering google earth is lited on there I think it fits]. The other is Musicbrainz Picard [or their other-platform equivalents], an opensource program that uses audio fingerprinting to match MP3s to an online database of music so it can tag them automatically for you and you can organize your collection quickly and easily [works very well with the last.fm player and audioscrobbler]. More info on Musicbrainz at http://musicbrainz.org/ and more info on sketchup at http://www.sketchup.com/

There is not a single DVD I have not been able to dump with this. Was able to create images of anything I threw at it. Lots of options. Even burns video game (Wii, Xbox 360, Xbox...) DVDs.

Frets on Fire
http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/
Don't deny it. Guitar Hero rules. This is an open source Guitar Hero clone. Play any song from any of the Guitar Hero games, or any of the hundreds of user programmed songs. Connect a USB Guitar Hero controller to the PC and use a driver available for download to use it with FoF, or use your keyboard (works decent, actually). Incredible selection of user created material... 3 Inches of Blood in a GH type game?!?! Fucking sweet.

more stuff i use.

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec)
class: lossless audio codec
http://flac.sourceforge.net/
FLAC is a lossless audio codec (vs. mp3, that is compressed) ideal for archiving audio recordings. the FLAC interfaces can be used to both create .flac files and decode .flac to .wav, for encoding into compressed formats.

Exact Audio Copy (EAC)
class: audio compression
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/
Exact Audio Copy is a so called audio grabber for audio CDs using standard CD and DVD-ROM drives. The main differences between EAC and most other audio grabbers are :
* It is free (for non-commercial purposes)
* It works with a technology, which reads audio CDs almost perfectly. If there are any errors that can’t be corrected, it will tell you on which time position the (possible) distortion occurred, so you could easily control it with e.g. the media player

note: i have not been able to determine if EAC is GPL or not, it is freeware. its good and it works with whatever your codec of choice is.

CDex
class: audio compression
http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
CDex can extract the data directly (digital) from an Audio CD, which is generally called a CD Ripper or a CDDA utility. The resulting audio file can be a plain WAV file (useful for making compilation audio CDs) or the ripped audio data can be compressed using an audio encoder. CDex also does 'secure ripping' jitter detection based on the cdparanoia library.
supported formats: Lame MP3 encoder, Internal MP2 encoder, APE lossless audio format, Ogg Vorbis encoder, Windows MP3 encoder (Fraunhofer MP3 encoder), NTT VQF encoder, FAAC encoder, Windows WMA8 encoder

MP3Gain
class: audio utility
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume. A good tutorial on usage can be found on Lifehacker.

there are also lots of good tutorials over on HydrogenAudio.org Wiki. a pretty decent audio enthusiast community.

edit: added some tags for readability.
