Access All Areas

This came up briefly before, in a thread about whether a UE book was a good thing or a bad thing, but assuming it to be a good thing I'm going ahead and publishing my book Access All Areas this summer. It's a 244-page guide to urban exploration; much of it is introductory, but I think active explorers can get a lot useful tips and tricks out of it. It has a few relevant stories but only one item reprinted from the zine. It has black and white pictures.

Anyhow, if you think you might want one in the fall, please consider pre-ordering a copy now, as the more copies I sell in advance the less deeply in debt I will have to go in order to pay the print bill. I plan to print them this month - ideally printing 3,500 copies if I can afford it.

The site about the book is at

Just curious -- did you approach any publishers with the idea for this book, or did you see it as self-published from the beginning?

I did talk to some publishers, but they were more interested in a best-of Infiltration book, whereas I wanted to do something totally new. I think Infiltration is well suited to being zines rather than a book, whereas Access All Areas should indeed be a book.

But, for the record, I eventually decided to self-publish because I thought it would be easier and more fun, not because I couldn't get a real publisher. A good friend of mine convinced me that do-it-yourself is where it's at. And so far it's been good.

I've heard that the publishing world can be as cut-throat as the music business in terms of authors getting mere pennies for each of their books which is actually purchased, which means authors have to sell tens or hundreds of thousands of copies before they can turn even a modest profit. So maybe self-publishing is the way to go if you are pretty sure you can sell all the copies you produce. Selling 3500 (or fewer) probably won't be a big deal with the UE community purchasing power, plus sales in independent bookstores. Plus, I don't imagine this is a money-making venture anyway, but more of an attempt to do something fun and recoup your costs, plus a little more if you're lucky.

How do you go about self-publishing anyways? Do you buy or rent the equipment?

With self-publishing you would get a printing company to print it for you. Shopping around for the best prices is a huge pain in the ass though. Just have to be sure to ask about all set-up costs, proofing costs and such. There are a lot of charges that can sneak up on you.

Cheers!

How are you printing it? If it's just the same format as the zine, I think I might be able to help...

The situation for textbooks may be slightly different because of the higher profit margin. Anyone who has gone to college, or taken a college-level class, recently can attest to the fact that academic books are ridiculously expensive. I think lower profit margins are more common when printing, say, a paperback mystery novel.

I think what Mat's saying about the similarities between the music industry and the publishing industry is accurate. Do it yourself or do it with corporate backing, if you flop you flop (and it's easier to flop if you DIY). If you are a sensation you are a sensation (and it's harder to be a sensation if you DIY). But if you're somewhere in the middle, like most people, those who do it themselves can actually make some money, whereas those who work for the industry wind up totally screwed.

Excalibur, thanks for the offer, but I'm using a different format for the book than for the zine. The book will be 6"x8" perfect bound. I hope I won't have thousands of them in my basement forever.

If shipping is an issue, I'm more than sure I can help you out with that at cut-rate prices (corporate account and such).

Also, the offer still stands for the zine!

Sorry, TaP, I can't accept cheques since Ninjalicious isn't my real name and Infiltration isn't a real business. I think PayPal does have some sort of weird system for sending cheques but I haven't used it myself.

Thanks a lot! That could be really good news. Shipping will definitely be an issue.

Sure, a cheque made out to cash would work too, but if you're going to do that why not just send a $20 bill?

I go to the Toronto meets occasionally, yeah.

Yes, but then you would receive the voided check with his real name written in.

Just send cash wrapped in a note so it doesn't obviously look like cash.

I've never had problems sending cash in the mail, although I've seen blatant incompetence from both the US and Canadian postal services elsewhere. Hopefully my order doesn't get "destroyed in transit" like that one box of Infiltration back issues
