How to cross a fence?

I have been at an abandoned nuclear weapons depot of the USAFAD (US Army Field Artillery Detachment) today. It was build during the cold war and was closed in 1993.

My problem is that I have to cross this fence to explore the buildings:

There are 4 rows (2 on each side) of barbed wire on the V shaped part of the post.
Do you have an idea how I could get on the other side without damaging the fence?

Carpet buddy carpet. Thats the easiest without cutting. Did you check the fence to see if someone else had cut it?

If it was abandoned 10+ years ago there's gotta be a hole in the fence, walk the perimeter, you'll find something.

Look for a place where maybe water has eroded the ground along the fence line leaving you places to slip under.

Cutting is never good, but walking the perimeter will let you pick the place where you can do the least amount of damage and be most able to repair it to keep out the taggers and vandals if you do end up having to cut...

Barbed wire, or razor wire? If it is barbed like you said, just climb up at a post, and hop over, it wont cut you unless you aren't careful, and same thing for catching your clothes. Maybe a little piece of carpet, shouldn't be too hard. Or bring a tiny ladder, the fence doesn't look way too tall, climb up and jump over, climb the fence, and flip the ladder over to the inside, same thing to leave.

I'd definitely look for a spot with a post near some trees and do the climb there. Tabi would help immensely if you had any. As long as it's just barbed wire, a slow careful climb should get you past it. If there's razorwire anywhere, it gets a bit tougher.

All good suggestions. A nice piece of carpet will do wonders. One of your car floormats or a welcome mat would be good, and cheap. It's also very easy to find castoff pieces of carpet at the dump, in dumpsters or even on the side of the road.

If it is barbed (not razor) wire, there is plenty of room between pointy parts for you to catch a handhold or place your foot safely. Climbing near a post is your best bet.

(EDIT: Forgot something.)

These could help ... tactical fence climbers ... they want a mint for them at http://shop.store....se/tacfenclim.html but you could get a torch and some round stock and make some up in less than an hour. Also, did you check for areas where you could unbolt the hardware around the gate, or pick a lock if you're into that? ~Grit.

rumor has it those fence steps are a pain in the ass and pretty useless unless you have gigantor feet or are carrying a heavy backpack (think tactical assault). They're not designed to help you cross barbed wire, just climb up the fence.

My next suggestion: moon shoes.

We actually did field training with those in my army unit, and you are correct, they are a royal pain. My SGT got fed up with dealing with them and called in the demolition team to show us a more effective way of dealing with fences. =)

Abandoned is not entirely correct. It is used as a meadow by the local farmers and they are maintaining the fence. Razor wire is illegal for private use in Germany so I guess they changed it when the Army left.
I can imagine that it would be easy to enter with a carpet if there was a row of barbed wire directly on top of the fence. But the posts look like this:

O\...../O
...\.../
..O\./O
.....I
.....I
.....I
.....I
.....I
.....I
I=post/fence
O=barbed wire

All trees are too small to support my weight.

All you have to do is climb up at one of the barbed wire support posts. Use it to pull yourself to the top, step in-between the rows of barbed wire and go down the other side. No problem.

Maybe it's easier than I think. This is the first time that I have to climb a fence to get in a location.

i am extremely poor climber, and if I can under a fence I will, but I have climbed a fence very similar to the one pictured a number of times. despite my lack of climbing experience, I find as long as I go slow and move carefully, I have very few problems. it is probably more doable than it seems.

As a side note, bringing a climber friend can help - in the time I have been exploring with mr sleep, I have improved a bunch just by watching him climb the fences before me, and than imitating his movements.

probably the easiest way would be bringing a shovel at night and digging a hole (large enough for you) under the fence. try also a mostly remote spot of the fence, that you will be hidden in, and that most people wouldnt find so easily (we dont want vandals writing dirty words everywhere in the base, do we?)
if you cant find a hidden part, dig the hole and then pull up some brushes next to the spot. remember, night would be the best time to do this if theres farmers around.
