Excerpt from a journalist's article about Victoria's Chinatown in 1911.

There is a notorious tale about how opium was shipped to the Inner Harbour near the foot of the Johnson Street bridge and then smuggled into Chinatown via a tunnel; the entrance of which can still be seen at low tide.

There was no need to smuggle opium at that time. It was perfectly legal. There were legal opium dens, production facilities, open sale. Legal.

Gambling is a different story. As was prostitution. It's also possible that illegal shit was smuggled. Who knows.

A common feature of Chinatown buildings is a "cheater storey", an extra floor created within a floor. This was to evade taxation. An owner could create an extra storey and keep all the income it generated. A good example of this you can see just above the shops in the On Hing Company Store 1710-1714 Government St. These may be sweet to get a look at, half-sized floors starting from the basement up...or down.

This is what we were looking for at the Pandora St. Squat. Passageways leading from one room to another. False doors leading to staircases.

Nuthin.

The stories some of the local panners tell me are more along the lines of tunnels up from the shoreline, and are under the streets or, in some cases, directly under d/t sidewalks.

Thanks J.P.

Your photo could well be the same thing I was told about. Interesting seizmic upgrades using 1/4 inch plywood to help anchor the beams! Btw, amazing candlelit photos you posted. I boosted the brightness and contrast, and this revealed a lot more detail. Definetly has the look of a lobby or waiting room for the ceremonial/sacrificial chamber :)

Entering that low tide toobz way past my discomfort zone, but curiosity still exists. Watch out for those crafty half tides, that come back early like they forgot something! A less difficult or risky drain might be that big structure at Gyro Park beach. Scoped it the other day, huge inside, (at the exit at least) Strong padlock on the top access hatch. Stuffed my W5 through one of the holes, but the damn flash craps out sometimes like it's afraid of the dark.

The hill above the beach is known for a series of pools, seems there's something kind of unique with the water table, artesian wells? something like that. I think that was talked about earlier...? Maybe there is an entrance upstream, perhaps a good sized drain because of this high water content.

J.P., that quote you posted from the 1911 article is awesome, this (virtually) confirms that specific use tunnels -for other purposes than drains, sewers and coal deliveries- do, or did exist. The cost and effort to fill them all in seems daunting, and effing expensive. Plus what some people from the homeless community say, (an exciting breakthrough just posted by Kublakhan, that hugely supports earlier but more vague references) therefore, how could they not exist?

Met someone a while ago who has an establishment around the Bastion Square zone. They opened and showed me a trap door in the floor, and said there is a lock on a fake High Voltage room/compartment, which is a strong deterent to most people. They claim the high voltage sign is fake to keep people out. I believe telephone workers or hydro people said that. Unfortunately we can't go very far before this barricade. I will go back, and see if they let me take a few pics.

I don't mean to be coy about withholding info, but out of respect to these shop people, I wouldn't want them to have too many people in camo gear, and waving baseball bat length Mag lites showing up unannounced. Kidding! not the behavior of a true UE'er. And determined UE detectives either already know, or probably have the skills to find and infiltrate anything remotley acccesable.

A while back, someone posted about the second parking level in that old building opposite the new TV Station on Broad. (Interesting and thanks btw.) Around that time, I lucked out after a short wait and tailgated into the residential part of the building. There is a long staircase which seems deeper than one story, (no turns) that opens to the lower level. The lights were all on, maybe I lucked out with the bottom door open for reno work. These photos show the obvious cinder block stuffed entrances under the sidewalk. There is another beside the shot looking under the street.

Seems these under sidewalk areas are fairly common, still interesting to me, and probably a good chance they are or were linked, for coal deliveries?

Happy exploring! The truth is down there...Attitude determines altitude, or for this thread at least, attitude determines depth.

There is no sacrificial chamber. Get outa town. The drains are old news, they connect thruout stores all over victoria. Probably used at one point for coal or transportation, storage etc.

And now we get reports that these tunnels (are) being accessed or known about by city workers.

Are you suggesting that the storm drains connect via stores downtown?

That idea is patently false. The storm drains had nothing to do with coal shutes. Coal must be dry to burn. Water is wet. Do the math.

As for the city workers, some of these guys, now retired, are the best and brightest sources for stories of mid 20th century tunnel discoveries. These guys were the people excavating city streets, circa 1950's. Forget about the office wonks who shuffle paper. The blue collar types who worked at the end of a shovel know more about this shit than the Officials of City History.

Say what you will, mavrix.

So I'm out and about, checking things, chatting with the people, poking around, minding my own business, eating a Snickers Bar, generally chillin like Bob Dylan, when I spot this scruffy-looking fella with a thick beard and stringy hair and mis-matched shoes, and he's collecting butts from the sidewalk, and he's got a shopping cart full of shit, and he's looking around all suspicious-like, muttering strange phrases, and so I ask the guy about this tunnel story I keep hearing and I mention that I'm new in town and these tunnel stories keep popping up and are they true and this is what he tells me:

"Ask KublaKhan."

I said pardon. He said "Ask KublaKhan."

"Who's that?"

"He's a guy who's got a map of the system."

And I'm thinking 'Hmmmm.'

"Can you introduce me to this guy?"

And the guy starts pulling tobacco out of one of the butts and drops it into a little plastic bag and then he starts rolling a smoke and then he says, "He ain't the kind of guy who likes meeting people."

"Oh," I said. "Do you know him?"

And the guy lights his smoke and takes a drag and blows and then he spits and then he says, "I talked to him this morning."

"And what does he look like?"

And the guy looked at me funny and asked if I was a cop. Or a process server. Or a bailiff, or a sheriff, or some other-type law person.

I said no.

"He's tall and he carries a dufflebag everywhere. And he reads. He doesn't smoke or take drugs, but I've seen him drunk once or twice and he can get pretty mean."

And then I ask if KublaKhan can take me into the tunnels and the guy said, "I guess if you wanna be a sacrificial lamb he'd take you inside." Then he asked if I could spare some change but I didn't have anything smaller than a five, so I gave it to him and he said "Thanks."

And that is how I met a guy who knows KublaKhan

Interesting story, maybe now when you ask people on the street about the tunnels you should also ask them about Kubla Khan. While you were poking around did you take any pictures of interest?

Up here in mass we have bunkers all over the seacoast, and many of them, when you go on a public tour, connect to other locations by means of tunnels. They can be very interesting. There's also a very intriguing fort near long beach in maine. I remember visiting it as a little kid, the location is a bit shady in my memory though.

The pentagram thingy discussed earlier turned out to be pretty much what Jester said it was: the frantic scribblings of shroomed-out teenagers. Or maybe kowalski said it. Whatever...they were right. The tunnel in which this pentagram was found is wide, squat and not nearly as interesting as I had hoped. Kinda anti-climatic. Whatever.

I'm now chasing bigger things. Wait for it. It will blow your mind.

??

Isn't that what Satanists are? Frantic scribbling shroomed-out teenagers? I fail to see a contradiction.

If they were old rich intelligent Satanists, they wouldn't be in a little smelly storm drain in the first place. It doesn't fit well with a religion that worships hedonism.

I was just chatting with a fellow who does test wells in Victoria, he says there's some nasty water under Ross Bay cemetary. I don't think I'm going to make it a regular destination. One time before when I had checked it out there was a distinct and unpleasant smell down there, a magic marker sort of smell, and I didn't go down because of it. This guy I was talking to confirmed that it was most likely from the dry cleaners, and good to avoid. And also that there was a lot of gasoline contamination in the ground water there. It smelled fine when we went down there kk, but if you start twitching funny you'll know what it is.

Agreed. You'd expect at least a lot of plush velvet and really good wine.

The Victoria Times Colonist ran a weekend story about underground spaces and pretty purple sidewalk thingies and a rising curiosity amongst The People viz. a viz. All Things Tunnel in Victoria.

These things happen. There was a similar story a few years back. Every now and then, the mainstream catches hold of something quirky and makes a bunch of noise and then the apparent interest in the matter, having been sufficiently explained, goes away.

So now the good people of Victoria, having brunched over the Weekend Edition of the Victoria Times Colonist, can rest assured that the pretty purple sidewalk thingies on Broad St. etc. etc. have been explained. There are spaces under the sidewalks of Victoria that were part of transport/storage space arrangement back in the day. There. No more mystery.

I've got my paper under my arm and I'm walking down the street and I see a panner chillin next to that now familiar ex-parking lot/wannabe condo/presently gut-kicked vacant lot, and I show her the story and we look at the pictures and she reads a bit and nods and smiles and says, "Look at the photograph of the tunnel (fig. 1). It's pretty new and clean looking." Then she points to an illustration (fig. 2) and says, "This is more what I've been through. It's old and dirty and I know one that goes on for quite a long time. I don't know where it comes up, where the exit is, but this one is pretty dangerous. There's a few of these old things."

{fig. 1}
56006.jpg (67 kb, 150x192)
{fig. 2}
56007.jpg (88 kb, 240x219)

I ask her what she means by 'goes on for quite a long time.' She says that it's a long connected series of these things (pointing to the illustration), and that you lose track of time when you're down there, and it's erie and weird and creepy because it's like wandering through a ghost town, kind of trapped between two worlds, unable to get out to the reality we know just a few inches above you. She said you can hear people walking on the sidewalks overhead. You can see their shadows move over the purple tiles. And all around you is this old storefront facade and the remnants of a part of the city that is forgotten.

I remind her that the story we're discussing is from the local newspaper.

And she reminds me that homeless people knew about these places long before some city reporter stumbled on the story. "Most of the people I know who live on the street know things about Victoria that you'll never find on any tourist map. I've been through parts of this place that you never will."

For example?

She points to the illustration again. "This is what I'm talking about. This is where the scary stuff happens. I seen it."

Like what?

"Rats the size of housecats. Their tails look like dried up carrots. Warf rats. Big and mean. Predators. They come up from the water and find their way into the tunnel. They once ate a guy. Ate him to the bone. A guy who slept in the space. A big rat ate him."

I think you're fucking with me.

And she smiles again and says, "Gotcha." But there are big rats. And the storefront in the illustration is more of what she's seen. The Broad St. space is the safe explanation. She tells me that it's pretty common for a bunch of kids go around asking questions and bother business owners. The newspaper didn't want people poking around asking questions so they put out this story.

"I've seen the other tunnels and they're not like this."

Amazing thread. Something was touched on in the initial post with a reference to Fort Rodd Hill, a gun emplacement in Colwood guarding the entrance to Esquimalt. Near to this is Mary Hill, which has a network of bunkers, gun emplacements, and tunnels from WW II (DND land, but about as secure as a mall parking lot) As a member of the reserves, I've had a few chances to peer through blocked and welded doors and pace the area above the complex (way frustrating, wanting to go poke around inside in the WORST way). Does anyone have any info/experiences in that neck of the woods?

Max

Edited to add photos 1 (general area) and two (remains of emplacements circled). Each emplacement is approx 100 ft across.
