| | | Not sure how to take that......but for those who are interested: The second bridge across Rock Bay (the first was in use from 1862-1871) was constructed in 1872 and remained in service until 1914, when it was removed from service. This was supposed to be a temporary closure, but in the next five years, municipal politics plodded along without actually accomplishing anything (things apparently haven't changed much since then). Engineers and other experts were contracted to look at the existing bridge and give their opinions/reports. Many options for repair and/or replacement were considered, studied, studied and studied, and nothing was done. Every proposal carried with it a price tag, and council rejected each option due to required costs. Meanwhile, the existing bridge was not maintained, and decayed past the point of return. Years of suggestions, court actions and public discussions about replacing the bridge followed. There was a court action launched in 1919 against the City of Victoria, seeking remedy for pulling the bridge down. It failed, as the judge ruled that it should be a civil action, not a criminal one. In the end, the streetcars were routed along other rails, the bridge was never rebuilt, and the tunnel remains an interesting piece of Victoria's transit history.
