So, I just did the Janion a few days ago. I'm not sure if somebody has resolved this before, but there was talk of a possible tunnel entrance in the Janion basement. Well, I went there, and did a pretty good scour of the basement floor for hidden doors/ tunnels, etc., and found absolutely nothing except really, really weak floorboards and dirt. Of course it could have been buried and/or covered, but I can't imagine anyone would be able to find it without some fancy equipment. I only went in there with a camera and a flashlight, after all.

As you can see, nothing spooky or tunnel-ey showed up, but it was a pretty cool adventure, nonetheless.

Great Picks Yo !

Incredible thread!
Many props to the GCG. I've never been to Victoria, nor Canada for that matter, but you've all guaranteed your beautiful city some of my future tourist dollars.

It was a fun ride. I laughed, I cried.
The rise and inauspicious silencing of the mavrixes and no prints.
The tunnels. The burns. The manhole covers left open - repeatedly. The new discoveries.
Safety tips for the safe, safety tips for the reckless.
The troll at the archives.
Best of all, the stories. Apocryphal, maybe, but the stories you brought us from the denizens of the city underworld - and your unwavering respect for them all - was my favorite aspect of this thread.
I enjoyed the companion film.
I wish I could see tweeek's ostensibly amazing pics.

Thus concludes my contribution to this thread, which is exactly nill. You climb a mountain, you gotta plant a flag.

Well I'm in Terrace BC, visiting my parents and my Mother blew me away with the information that should told me. All this time I had no idea of what she has to offer with information regarding Victoria as she lived in Victoria since she was 3 years old.

My Mother use to work in the Northern Junk Yard building when she was a 14 years old with my Aunt during the early 1960's. At this time the building with the Junk Yard sign was called Oakland Industries. This was a canary company, my mother would gut the fish right out back near the water shore while ships would pull up and bring in the goods. I asked her if she remember what the building next to this one was doing at this time. She can't remember as it was over 50 years ago.

She also informed me that at this time there was no tunnel leading to the basement although it didn't surprise her either if there was at one time. She has 100's of pictures of Victoria during the early 1900's that she had also showed me. I was blown away. I told her if she can scan these for me. She is so interested of the underground Tunnels and wants to start reading this thread.

Here is a picture in 1888 of the first parliament buildings in James bay. I only took a picture with my phone but she promises me to get it scanned soon. 1.

The halls of Wonders are Very soon, Very soon. As well I will post more pics once my mother scans them for me. Very interesting stuff.

Hey, if in the basement of the "J" again let me know what you see in the basements front wall - right side near the corner. Just curious after seeing something when they dug the sidewalk up in front a couple months ago. Thx

Agree Dog, I stopped and took a picture last month of this exact thing which you are referring to, made me really wonder what was this all about? I even took a picture for later.

It appears I'm not the only one who said.. hmmmmm..

I think that is covering part of the basement of the Janion. The basement, as far as I saw, extended a bit past the front doors when I was there, and I'm guessing that this was the part. That slab of metal looks like a bitch to pick up, though. :/

Agreed Hack, I was thinking the same thing as well. Way to heavy to be discrete, if it could even be possible!!! This sheet of metal was easily over 2 inches think and very long as you can see. I'm back in Victoria on Tuesday! I may look down some man holes, of course not go down until you're back from your trip Hack, with re assurance to never, ever be left open in any way.

She's an 18 year old meth addict, and she's covered in scabs, and her teeth are brown, and she cried a couple of times, and she lost her dog, and she's been panhandling outside a local Starbucks, but no one has given her any money.

She got high in a tunnel near a very expensive restaurant near Chinatown in Victoria.

She doesn't remember how she got in, or why they decided to go there instead of their usual place, but it seemed like a good idea at the time and now she can't shake the sound of screaming babies from her head, and she's pretty sure that if you go to this place at night, you can find your way throughout the whole of Chinatown and even into Oldtown, because the guy she was with that night knows everything about the city, but he took off after a bench warrant was issued, and she thinks he has her dog.

She was there three days ago. It's a manhole in the sidewalk, and it's under a streetlamp, so already I think that maybe she's suffering some psychosis, because I know that the restaurant is usually quite busy, so people would have watched her go into the sidewalk with the guy and maybe her dog. It wouldn't have looked right, from their perspective, this young woman obviously in distress, and her dog and that guy...why on Earth would they go into a manhole, anyway?

But she looked me in the eye and begged me to believe her.

And then she said, "There's a cult in this city that kills people."

So I checked out this manhole, and there's a bit of wear in the concrete around the rim and it looks like maybe the manhole cover was popped off the hole and dragged to one side. And when I press my ear to the little holes, I can hear rushing water. I could also hear a high-pitched whine and what sounded like a barking dog.

I gave her five bucks because she wanted a coffee and a bagel, and she promised to draw me a map, even though she said she couldn't remember too many details, except for the sound of screaming and a dull yellow light coming from around a corner in this tunnel and there were moving shadows and she thought that she saw someone looking around a corner at them as they got high.

I gave her a disposable camera and asked her to take some pictures of this place, and that I'll give her $50 if she brings the camera back in good shape.

"I won't lose it," she said. "I'll take some pictures for you. Promise?"

"Fifty dollars for the camera after all the pictures have been shot. No fucking around. I want to see that tunnel."

"Promise."

Well, it's all about studying these forums as I have like the bible, hours, and hours every night of none stop edge of your seat reading. The above Quote.. Well I think I found it. I've taken pictures of every man whole in China town, around China town and more. I'm seeing manholes in my sleep I tell you.

This story and the 95 year old Chinese man has seriously peaked my interest of 1 of the top stories on this forum and thank you for sharing it with us KK.
Saying all this I believe I have found the entry point of this young girl and her dog.

This place is very popular with tourist and for sure people would of seen this young girl entering this hole, near a lamp post. How they didn't call the police is beyond me, but I think I found it! I wont disclose this place. Only to a few on private messages who have investigated these places before.

This makes three regraded cities in the Cascadia area I know of (Seattle and Port Angeles are the others).

I guess the city engineers back then neglected to include the possibility that the fill would settle, so now the street is sinking.

As a Seattle kid in the '60s, I remember how awkward it was to walk down First Avenue because the street had sunk and the sidewalks slanted down to meet it. Eventually the street and sidewalks were repaired. On Seattle's Underground Tour (a.k.a. "Taste of UE") I learned that the streets were raised by filling them with sawdust from Yesler's mill, and the sidewalks constructed as bridges between building exteriors and streets. By modern times the sawdust had decomposed, thus the collapse or "settling."

Was driving by and the plate at the other front corner was off. Driving a truck I was able to see down a couple feet - there was definitely an opening to the Janion. About the width of a window or door with a brick header and bars going down. Perhaps a window like on the sides but i don't ever recall any pictures that shows the janion street level ever lower then it is now. Perhaps a sidewalk access for loading coal??? Thats why I was curious if anyones in the basement again to check the front left corner - be interesting if the opening was window or door size.

Yes coal was my first thought.
Do you think there was under sidewalk passage along Store St such as the one along Wharf St and if so could they at one time been connected?

Thats a construction plate covering the old coal access if I recall the extension under the side walk will be gone once full renos are started, repin the building footings probably put an elevator shaft in, retaining wall by sidewalk extension then backfill and seal it back up for ever. I sealed off the sidewalk extension under the new England hotel late last year

Kk, I just do my job it sucks sealing off these treasures but its almost necessary, beside the one I sealed off was full of junk and concrete. On another note, we start in the janion today, my boss knows I want to be there but I'm in a 6hr hydro orientation to work another site, I dont enjoy ruining these sites, were improving them really but making them no longer abandon. It is nice with the worry free unlimited roam time I can have

The art is always changing in the hall of wonders some graff artists go down there because they know its less likely to cause attention
