??? The train makes the return trip in the afternoon, leaves Court-mox at about 1 in the afternoon, heading back to Vic, for about 6, you can take a one way trip. I do it all the time.

PS, as I write this, the train has been suspended , indefinitely, due to poor track conditions. It may never get going again. Sad, once a railway stops, it is very hard to get it back. This Island has no idea what they are loosing.

Agreed. Talk about shitting the bed.

Now this drama with the Johnson St bridge. Not even open to trains, to cyclists, or pedestrians!??! WTF?

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

the people who run this city are all total fucking idiots, every last one of them. That bridge had a maintenance schedule, and it worked, but when someone got it in their head to make a new bridge legacy project, maintenance stopped. A tactic not reserved for developers holding onto heritage properties, it would seem, as demolition by neglect is exactly what we're witnessing.

Once the paranoia of an unsafe bridge got a foothold in the many mindless morons of Victoria (yeah, there's a shit ton) then the city can say whatever they want, and we'll believe them.

Why I appear to be the only one who doubts any superstructure that can safely support it's own weight is suddenly unsafe to ride a bike across, (sigh) I dunno. People should just use it anyways. They put up a barrier, we kick it into the water. Another barrier, tossed over again. Fuck em all, right in the ear.

That is why they are raising the bridge tomorrow at noon.

Unless there are oh say several hundred people standing on the bridge.

Exactly! It's the public's time to voice on several issues. Transportation issues abound. The future of the railway might very well be at stake as well.

Srysly, I saw a map online a few years ago that showed an old tunnel on the base. The description said it was blocked off but used for storage. I've had no luck finding that link again.

There is a tunnel between the submarine building, and it's annex, the submarine . It goes between the Dockyard Drydock, and the Submarine Squadron building. I have not been in it, it has been closed since before I reported aboard HMCS Huron. I understand sesmic concerns are one of the reasons why it is closed.

The path aboveground would take it under Shop 137/137A (Oil Burner Controls). There's not much on top of the hill there, so I suspect that the tunnel has some chambers off it, probably originally used for ammo storage. I am aware of the magazine on one of the islands in Esquimalt Harbour.

It is allegedly, unlined rock.

Re the train: It sucks- I was planning on going for a ride the weekend they pulled the pin. On the railfan sites I read, not much positive outlook at this time for rail service on the island. Looks like we're down to 3 public passenger carrying railways on the island

Hey, that's great Peach, maybe Jimmy's not nuts after all . (Looks with big Essondale grin at K.K.) 'Submarine Building' awesome.

Damn sad about the Silver Bullet, first we lose an incredibly iconic world class heritage bridge, and now the train. I think it will return though, hopefully within a year or less.

The Brentwood Mill Bay ferry almost got axed, now they've rebuilt the dock to take a bigger ferry.

Well, the thing with the old E&N, is the feds have a constitutional obligation to help fund it, as it was a condition of BC being in confederation. That's why the ENTIRE BOTTOM EAST SIDE OF THE ISLAND IS PRIVATE LANDS, the E&N land grant was given as another condition.

And I do know of at least one person who loved him when he was homeless.

Rev. Al ... Have never met the man, but he is an unsung hero and highly undervalued. Along with everyone else who works or volunteers at the shelters. A friend of mine works at one and I sure as hell couldn't do it.

It'll be a sad day when I watch the Blue Bridge go down. Speaking of that... I was speaking with a cop recently working on a murder case. They were diving for the weapon where the suspect said he threw it. They pulled up a gun, but not the right one - It was a 1930s pistol! I wonder what kind of other surprises they're gonna find when putting new foundations in. Our water is too acidic for anything made from wood to survive long. I suspect needles, beer cans, industrial stuff, assorted liquor/spirits/soda bottles from 100 years ago, and maybe stuff from the old Songhees village (stone artefacts or bottles). First Nations used to trade for liquor/beer brought up from California around the time of the gold rush. Its not like the had a recycling plant so I've heard they just used to old bottles into the water.

I suspect beer cans.

Beer cans don't last in the chuck for more than a month in intertidal zones with air around. The thin aluminum is quickly eaten away. Underwater, away from oxygen, they may very well last years. I wonder about the condition of that old pistol!

A-Lien: you have me drooling over the thought of calamari. Leaving on the 22nd, unfortunately, which isn't a lot of time to do much of anything; most of that time is completely free for me though. No exams, nothing.

Anyone know of any good spots in Waterloo, ON, or Montreal? Those are my next stops...

Will someone help me eat the ~20 cupcakes lurking in my kitchen at the moment? Seriously.

Montreal is Canada's best city. Write that down. If I had to leave Victoria for any other Canadian destination, Montreal would be my first, second and third choice. Toronto would be my sixth choice, but only if I had a gun stuck in my ear.

I wasn't a huge fan of Toronto when i was there last summer actually. Victoria is tiny and pretty and full of idiotic university students and overpriced everything, but I'd prefer staying here for a couple years to doing my grad studies in Toronto. Hell, I didn't even bother finishing my application to U of T, haha. I woke up one day and went '...nope.. don't think I could live there for a couple years after all.. screw this.'
That being said, I'm darn glad to get out of Vic. I really wish I'd had a chance to do some actual exploring here but school was insanely busy and juggling two jobs hasn't helped matters either. Oh well!
