I recently ran into an old high school friend of mine who was laid off the former "fur trading" rehabilitation project. He told me during the renovations a large tunnel was exposed in the basement which at one time connected the basement to the former docks and warehouses on Wharf St. My friend told me the tunnel could be traversed a fair
distance before encountering a bricked off area. Some old tools and light fixtures were present. Although the basement access has been filled in again I thought it was an interesting snap shot of what was.

-M

Yes! Yes!! Yes!!!

Huge thanks and High Five for sharing this. If you trust your friend is not a 'story teller', meaning bullshit artist, then this IS legit, and confirms what many of us have hoped and believed existed. It seems extremely logical that there would be a way to get dem furs from dem boats to dat store.

So now, if you can get more info, maayyyyybeeee there are other access points before the bricked off area. If he can tell you the approximate path this tunnel took, this could help. Also, this means there may be more tunnel sections on the other side of this brick wall.

Yah I'm excited and that's the way it is ...for good reason. Your AV is scary but you rock

My friend is a no-nonsense kind of guy, so I believe he is a very reliable source, which makes me all that more excited of learning of this unveiling. I have a lot more questions for him. This finding makes me wonder if this is an extension of the line that use to service the merchants at Market Square. If this is true, then one could theorize that the tunnel running into the basement of the rejuvenation project was pushed through some years later then the original section, as Market Square predates the rejuvenation by 30 plus years??

Indeed. One could theorize. In fact, one already has.

Of course if "this guy I know", "my friend", and all the other people in "the know" were right with their tunnel information, then Victoria as well as Vancouver have bigger tunnel system than all other places in the world combined.

Even if only 1% of the 'stories' are true, then that means certain things do exist or did. The chance of Mike's friend being the only one to have seen this tunnel is very unlikely. There are dozens of workers on that project. I think it's a reasonably safe bet that this information is true. In time, others are likely to confirm or deny what this construction worker has said.

A couple of years ago, there was a fire under a downtown street, allegedly caused by a homeless person. This confirmed that there was a tunnel under said street. Some people already knew this

Indeed. Just as city-workers from the past...retired now, living quietly, etc....have stated that they uncovered tunnel-structures throughout the city during various city works projects. And just as future projects will uncover other tunnel structures blah blah blah...

Even though Victoria isn't that big of a city, compared to say, New York, we do have an extremely high per-capita ratio of tunnels-per-person.

Well documented tunnels, that is.

Victoria's underground is so unusual (from an engineering perspective, mostly as a result of our geographical situation), so extensive (considering we don't have any of the subterranean mass-transit features that most large cities have), and so mysterious (new findings are being made on a constant basis, even by the people who run this city), that it's difficult to know where to begin in describing what our underground even is.

It's a murky brew to look through.

We're listening.

Oh it likely is something like that. There are tunnels in a lot of cities, so it wouldn't be unusual to have some there. It just gets silly at times the amount of people who know about some tunnel. At best, 99% of the time, they can't show anything they say they can. Not because satanic ninja monkeys killed them, but simply because they were just making shit up.

I used to drink there a lot.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

cause now that i think back, when they first started renovating, i did some work in the basement i vaguely remember seeing a bunch of pipes on the ceiling that eventually ran through a concrete wall that had just been put up, i cant remember if it was under the sidewalk on pandora of if it was still in the basement space. its weird down there anyways before it was renovated, reminded me of something from the movie hostel

Sleepy old thread is sleepy, so, it's not like I can do much, but; like possibly in the old hotel posted above, many small shops downtown have basements, and windows in the back. Then behind the windows is another room. Likely past joined spaces that linked many shops under a common covered sidewalk. Historically interesting; but not a real tunnel.

For real tunnels go downtown, and cross under one of Rat's finest and avoid the rain before or after enjoying your lunch. That tunnel is no secret, some of them/us locals have been in it.

But I heard of another tunnel the other day. A friend with good connections who worked years ago in the Mayors building says there is an escape tunnel for the Mayor so he can escape the media and crowds if needed. It allegedly runs a couple of blocks west of his office, and pops up in or around a local hotel. Hey, you never know.

The sleepier the better. Or, rather, the goofier the better. That also works.

Funny. Apparently Woodwynn Farm is now able to operate. Only 4 homeless people are at the farm now. Central Saanich Council refused to give zoning so that homeless people could live on the farm.

I think this is the most brilliant idea i've heard since someone suggested we install revolving doors at the Eric Martin Pavilion.

Long time reader of this thread.

Thank you so much for your history and stories.

Last year I was in Victoria for a day, spent so much time Downtown in awe. Such an amazing place.

I am wondering of suggestions for local history tours or groups as I am visiting again this summer. Obviously I am most interested in the tunnels, but any basic tour which gives details of downtown Victoria. I am also interested in the history of Freemasonry in Victoria as well.

Thanks in advance.

The link is about as exciting as reading "Ghost Towns of Southern Vancouver Island", and likely has little else to add.

My understanding was that the area in which to search for the missing gold mine was somewhere connected to the San Juan river from Renfrew.

When I was at the CRD office in Sooke the other day, my little monster was terrorizing the sectional map. I really hadn't realized how much area is in behind us to the other side of the 'hat.

I've a good friend who dirt bikes a LOT in that area- and he has never found a mine full of gold
