Ethics and money
< on 3/17/2005 3:28 AM >

Let's suppose you found $100 while UEing, say in an envelope or a cash box, or a safe. What would you do?

I would try to find the person who owns the property, but if I get nowhere with that, I'd keep it.

[Admin. Note: This isn't a vote, so please don't simply post "I'd keep it" or "I'd take it". Explain why you'd do what you'd do. -Ninj]

I would keep it I guess. This is only because I'm REALLY hard up for cash. I had to dish $11'500 out of my own pocket for school this year.

I would keep it because I'm saving for a new laptop, and someone else is going to take it eventually.

Since I don't have "trusted" status I'll be honest - I'd likely keep it. If I happened to run into other people and they asked me about it directly I would give it back, but it's hard to locate the owner of a $100 bill - "oh yeah, that is mine"

If there was no identification, I would keep it. If there was clear identification attached, I would probably return it. Returning lost items to clueless owners is priceless and I would hope someone would do the same for me.

Most places I visit look like buildings in Beruit... in such a totally derelict location, where it's obviously not been touched for many years... uhh, I'd have a hard time not taking it to be honest. But if there was any evidence it was, say, drug money or belonged to a squatter, I'd leave it be. I figure, in the first case I want nothing to do with it, and in the second he needs it more than I do.

Depends on whether it is a place where it likely belongs to a squatter, vagrant, etc... If so I'd leave it.

If there were no signs of someone living there or ownership I'd keep it.

On an ethical note, I am not one to keep others money. I have found wallets and purses with that much money and gladly returned them, because the owner could be identified.

If there was enough info to return it, I would, cash intact. If there was any chance that it could belong to area homeless or squatters, i would leave it be. If it was just money lying about, however, i could really use a $100 worth of tacos...

If I can ID a owner, they can have it back. If not, I guess it's mine. Now, what if it is clearly part of the site (open a drawer and find a cashbox with so $$$ still in it)? Leave it where it's always been or...?

Most people would seem to the same as I would...

If I can ID, I'd return it (I lost my wallet with that much cash before, and someone returned it to me, fully intact). If it belongs to a squatter or the homeless, I'd leave it. Otherwise... I really could use $100.

Based on my experience in abandoned buildings I am far more likely to find $100 worth of antiques or scrap metal than I am to find an envelope full of cash.

That said if the building is abandoned in the fullest sense of the word then it is either owned by no one, or more likely, owned by the local or federal government.

Now the chances of me donating money to the government on top of the taxes I pay aren't particularly likely. So I would have to say that money is going straight into my pocket. The only situation in which I would hand it over to anyone would be if they asked me directly if I have found it.

If I found 100 dollars just lying around [assuming the person didn't "conveniently" leave it there with personal contact info] I'd start freaking out that this was a trap and there was some crazy mob fellow hiding in the closet waiting to shoot me, so I'd pick it up and exclaim that I'd now return the C-note to Fatius T. Third the 5th! when suddenly some big mob fellow would jump out of the closet and shoot me.. then desecrate my corps :]

I'd take the money, then I'd take the envelope, cash box, or safe, and sell it. Then I would have $100 plus whatever I got from the envelope, cash box, or safe.

Can I vote "dumb post of the week?"

geesh guys; use common sense!

I'd take the money and buy a hooker with it, and take her back to the site to seal the deal.

If the money had some sort of ID attached I would try to find the owner.
If no ID, I'd take the money and run.

I don't need $100 of someone else's money. I'd leave it.

I'm kinda preachy on the topic.

If I did need it, and that would require that someone else dependent on me needed it, I would take it. By lethal force if need-be.

I have quirky principals. "SKINNER!"
