Something common and nasty that you may encounter in this hobby.
A greenish-black mold. It can grow on material with a high cellulose and low nitrogen content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. Growth occurs when there is moisture from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Stachybotrys chartarum is a fungus that has become notorious as a mycotoxin producer that can cause animal and human mycotoxicosis. The mycotoxins and other biologically active compounds produced by S. chartarum are of concern to human health. Mycotoxin poisoning by this fungus is referred to as stachybotryotoxicosis.
In addition, the fungus produces nine phenylspirodrimanes and cyclosporin, which are potent immunosuppressive agents. They suggest these compounds could be pathogenicity factors involved in pulmonary hemorrhage in infants exposed to S. chartarum.
Fusarium, a very nasty mold that can cause extremely dangerous skin infections. The symptoms are similar in appearance to Strep A, the "flesh eating" bacteria. Many experts compare the symptoms to that of leprosy.
Ulcerations or infections of the face, hands, and body are very graphic. Once infected, most persons stay bed ridden for a considerable period.
Can further debilitate the immune system of people with suppressed immune systems. Preliminary analysis reveals that Fusarium has been linked to impotence.
Other similar but less potent molds you may encounter are:
Aspergillus(only slightly less toxic),Acremonium, Cylindrocarpon, Dendrodochium, Myrothecium, Trichoderma, and Trichothecium. They all contain Trichothecenes which are potent inhibitors of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, can cause neuroligical damage and are carcinogenic. They have been well studied in animal models because of concern about their potential misuse as agents of biological warfare, due to their ability to destroy human health (mentally and physically), and never show up in an autopsy. Sick buildings are one of the three major causes of fungal illness in industrialized nations today. Aflatoxins also produce acute necrosis, cirrhosis, and carcinoma of the liver.
