Exploring Abandoned Part of Govt Property

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this, but I was driving and saw what I thought to be an old school sign, probably from the 20's or 30's from it's materials and how it arched over the road. I did some research and it's actually an old juvenile detention complex that got shut down 40+ years ago when Atlanta decided to step down on funding the facilities, but it's right next to a newer National Guard armory which kind of got me thinking about the possibility the DOD could own the land. It turns out the property that the complex is on was given to the DOD by the city for them to redevelop and use for the National Guard armory that borders it, but that never happened and now the buildings just sit there. I've seen one article about a movie being filmed there. It's completely fenced in, but I could see the gate sitting open when I drove by. There's no visible warning signs, and I wouldn't take the main trail, additionally it's separated from the armory by a fence. I just wanted to know if anyone has experience doing this, and how high security would be. I've only driven by once and couldn't see any cameras or physical security anywhere, but maybe I'm missing something. There's like 7 buildings and it would definitely be worth it if I could get in, but I want to make sure it's not just a bad idea. Appreciate any advice from people who may have experience.

I don't have any experience with something like this myself, but on one of my recent posts (also one you commented on) about the construction sites and cameras, /-/ooligan described something similar to what you are talking about now that may help you a little bit. But that's all I got for help and all the credit goes to him, but I hope it can give you just a little bit of advice. The fact that there was even a sign saying "USE OF DEADLY FORCE AUTHORIZED" on his DOD site he found should make you want to be super careful. If I saw something like that I personally don't think I'd take the risk. But again, he said it was all basically a bluff.

Yeah I saw that which is what kind of made me ask the question. As far as I know it was never actually developed and used for the military, I might just go and do a little research in person because every place is different so I don't know how many people could actually help with this specifically, but I'll probably just say fuck it and go check it out. Since it's separated from everything else by a physical barrier I'm hoping they just haven't touched it yet, so no cams or anything. I also saw some people who got in there previously, so I'll probably try and talk to them about it.

i'd say walk around it (out of trespassing lines) before making any moves. if it looks safe and you don't see any cameras, and especially if it's been explored before, it's probably fine.

Just do it. Document your findings, and report back.

It's not easy to visualize what the facility looks like exactly, but I would probably spend some time outside, try to look at it and see if there are any patrols/security. If you have a dog I've found it to be a good excuse to be able to loiter.

That's what I was planning on doing, just a basic walk-around just to make sure there aren't any blatant cameras or some other security systems.

Definitely going to do that after thinking about it. I'll probably do a walk-around on Friday, then head back Sunday to see if anything changed, such as the gate being closed instead of open or wtv. I'll bring my camera to try to get some pics since it's a pretty cool area, it's got an old school and jail building in the same complex from what i could find, among other things.
