I am thinking about starting a youtube channel: BBB (bikesbongsandbandos). I’m probably going to purchase a higher-end ebike and some basic gear for shooting video. Thoughts?

I have been running a small channel for a couple of years so I have some perspective to share. YouTube is great fun, but can be a lot of work depending on your goals. If you are just planning on sharing your adventures, it can be pretty easy. If you hope to generate an income producing videos, it becomes a lot more work. I have a good friend who makes his living on YouTube and he works his butt off.

Depending on the level of production quality you are hoping to achieve, there is a big learning curve for sound, editing, camera settings, etc. The great thing is that there are soooo many videos that take you through every step in the process.

Go for it, have fun, I hope you channel rocks it.

I've been playing the YouTube game for well over ten years now.

YouTube has gotten picky about content they're willing to monetize. Using the word bong in the channel name will decrease the chances of ever making a penny from your videos. Any mention of drug use (even alcohol) will get your video marked as adult content and ineligible for ad revenue.

If your content gets flagged by their algorithms, you can request a "manual review" of the video. The problem is that the manual reviewers may be in other countries with different societal values. The time of day you request a manual review weighs heavily into what country your video gets sent to for manual review.

To realize any payout, you need a minimum of 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time in the previous 12 months. Even once you hit that threshold, you have to continue to maintain 1000 subscribers and 335 hours of watch time every month to keep getting paid.

If you drop below the 4000 hours and get demonetized, you have to wait 90 days before you can reapply for monetization.

Average watch times are under 3 minutes. Spending a lot of time making a 60 minute video that people only watch a few minutes of is a waste of your time.

I found it better to do a lot of short (under 5 minutes) videos racks up watch time faster than longer videos.

In order to use your head, you have to go out of your mind.
