I think personally my favorite places to explore have to be former military sites, does anyone have any cool stories about exploring abandoned military bases?

I've explored my fair share of military ruins over the years. Here are a few threads I've made:

A missile test site in Utah

A US Air Force base and ghost town in Montana

A munitions depot and US Army base in Illinois

A munitions factory in Illinois

A US Air Force radar station in Wisconsin

Some US Air Force munitions bunkers in Wisconsin

I've also explored a US Air Force radar station in Montana, an anti-ICBM surface to air missile complex in Montana, and a Titan missile silo in Colorado, though I haven't made threads on those ones yet.

I’m not at all familiar with military bases or missile silos, so please forgive my lack of knowledge, but are missile silos safe to explore?

No. Missile silos often contain highly contaminated water, as well as rusty catwalks, unstable floors, and long falls onto piles of sharp metal. Also there's a possibility of getting trapped underground in some of the bigger ones if you have to rappel in but can't ascend out for some reason.

Military bases have all the routine hazards of normal abandoned buildings, with the occasional addition of unexploded ordinance and/or military/Department of Homeland Security activity.

Of course, none of that really stops people. You jst gotta be aware of the hazards, how to spot them, and how to avoid them.

My high school in Alaska was a former Naval Air Station, it had lots of weird old buildings that were partly or fully disused. There were also WWII bunkers all over the place, we'd sneak off to explore them sometimes. That's actually what got me into UE!

Alaska has a lot of strange military stuff in general. Cold war radar bases, forgotten WWII artillery cannons, missile sites, etc. The whole town of Whittier was built as a semi-secret military port, and the entire population was crammed into two communist-style buildings due to the lack of flat land to build on. One of those buildings is now abandoned (and the whole town still lives in the other one). I have more of a story / write-up on that trip here: http://drainfreak.com/df/whittier/

There's a very well-preserved Nike missile site near Anchorage. I hiked up there once or twice and poked around. We saw a bear and found a ton of dropped / lost "stuff" from military training (ammo, knives, spent smoke grenades, etc). Later the army found my website and published a briefing on trespassing at the site with some of my photos (lol).
My writeup / photos: http://drainfreak....summit/missile.htm

Some of our "loot" (I didn't consider it unethical, since all of this was just lying on the ground): http://drainfreak.com/temp/stuff.jpg

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Here's an explore from last year at an old NORAD radar station in the middle of nowhere:
