I crossed something off my bucket list this weekend, walking under the river in a subway tunnel. Though I accomplished this by walking to the other side, and then turning around to go back out the same way I got in.
1. The cops were out to get me, and set up a blockade in front of the photo section of the nearest market to my home.
2. I needed to stop in to buy a new battery for my remote shutter.
3. On the way to the next location. It was one of these days.
4. Fortunately, it's a lot easier to breathe underground.
5. A bit of flooding.
6. Back in the subway.
7. Tracks are laid and they've put these weird things up in the middle. I think they might mount a walkway on there, judging by other tunnels.
8. Waiting for the train.
9. Ahead, the train tunnel was parted into two smaller cylindrical passageways. This is where the line passes under the river.
10. You can see the change in tunnel sizes here.
11. There were large flood doors in the ceiling.
12.
13. It was about a 15-minute walk to the other side of the river.
14. This was about two-thirds through.
15. Now I'm on the north side of the river.
16. There was various machinery on the tracks.
17. This thing started making noise while I was there.
18. Turns out it's for drainage.
19. Time to turn around and head back.
On the way, I pulled out my phone to listen to mp3s, without earphones realising that noises don't travel far down here (there are loud fans on both ends of the tunnel under the river and I couldn't hear either from a reasonable distance). I listened to about four songs averaging 3.5 minutes on the way back. Also I realised I have more songs in my phone about subways and train tracks than I had imagined.
20. This curve is now familiar to me, as I know the exit is not far around the corner.
