Food for thought
entry by DeepCyde

April, 2003.

It was ungodly hot. I was driving through the streets of a border town called Safwon. There were the usual crowds of people begging on the sides of what they call a street. I've seen roads in the springtime backwoods of Ely MN look better. The Haze in the morning air was pungeant. Fumes from smoke, decay, and the dead lying about.

Their was a gathering of children, about 13 years the oldest looked. 22 of them i counted. They were playing some sort of tag game with each other, all laughing and running. As we approached they massed into a group, pushing towards our vehicles. I had an extra MRE that i hadn't eaten, from the day before. I get it ready to toss out the window. Closer we get, they can now see that i have somthing in my hand to throw, they start getting excited, pointing. I toss it to the center of the crowd. I feel good. Hoping that i could make a little difference in this godforsaken war in the false name of peace.

The crowd of kids erupt on the child that cought the MRE. They all wanted it for themselves. Kicking, shoving, biting, pushing, then punching. Someone else grabs it. Same thing happens to that child. Siblings against Siblings. The crowd moves away as it follows the next kid with the MRE. Sitting on the ground, bleeding, crying, is the child that first caught it.

Our convoy continues on, moving past and out of site of the town. Carrying supplies to destroy.
