The (w)hole

Vegabonds. Transients. Homeless.

They are a common occurance when searching, exploring. Nuisance, society calls them. Underprivilaged to some. A waste of space to others.

I find them a wealth of information. To be envied. I talk with them, call some of them my friends. I understand their life, some do it by choice, others by chance.

I grew up an only child, not spoiled like the old wives tail would have you believe. I wasn't a part of any group or clique in school. I had friends here and there. I still talked and liked everyone, but no one i was close to. I had no fear of making friends with people in the school who weren't considered "cool" to hang out with, probably because i was one.

As my love for exploring grew, and adventures became farther in range, i met alot of people who didn't pay for the land they slept on, or the roofs over their head. They use the forgotten places. Places that we walk past everyday, and never think to look inside.

I met a person on Aug-7th, his name was Boris. He had a heavy russian accent. I've spoke with a number of russian people in the past, and placed his accent on the oriental side of Russia. He came to the U.S. in 1990 he said. Around the time of the coup. Searching for a better life, he leaves his family. Leaves what he thinks will be a massive blood shed. Comes to the US to find work. He is a car salesman, new and used. He makes decent money, enough to have a fitness club membership for $40 a month, and clean clothes in a suitcase. He showers at the club, lives out of the suitcase. He could rent an apartment, but instead he sends all his money to his wife and kids, so that they may buy the things that they need.

He hopes to have them here in the U.S. one day.

His story is by choice, he could live like anyone else. But he won't, as long as his family suffers, he will work, send his money home. I didn't ask him what he did during the winter, i'm sure it is an interesting story.

I hope i run into him again.
