The long promised sequel to
my post about the dredgeboat! This particular location is actually just across town from said dredgeboat, so I got to hit three amazing locations in one day.
These abandoned train cars came in two groups- one long string of miscellaneous passenger and freight cars, and a bunch of derailed cabooses (cabeese?) a hundred yards away or so. As best as I can tell these cars all belonged to the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad company, more commonly known as the Milwaukee Road company for short. Milwaukee Road was a class I railroad that went bankrupt in 1986, and according to a local these cars have been sitting here for at least 25 years so it's unlikely they were abandoned in 1986 when Milwaukee Road declared its third and final bankruptcy. Rather, they were more likely abandoned when Milwaukee Road's successor company, the Chicago Milwaukee Corporation, went bankrupt under the financial weight of cleaning up environmental hazards on the vast stretches of tracks Milwaukee Road had owned.
Normally I don't really like exploring on rainy days because the lighting sucks, the mood is dreary, and keeping my camera gear dry is a pain- but sometimes it pays off. After twenty minutes sheltering from a downpour in a moldering dining car I emerged to this incredible sight, and that made it all worth it.
