| | | I finally knocked something off the bucket list this year with this ghost town. The town was incorporated in 1886 and soon became the most successful mining area in the county. It was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1899 but was rebuilt to continue harvesting of the abundant minerals such as gold, silver, lead and zinc. The area was mined until 1984 when the EPA deemed the water toxic and it was declared a Superfund site two years later. The town still sits decaying over a mountain cliff as has had some ludicrous redevelopment proposals such as a ski resort for rich people despite the toxicity of the water and soil. Attempts to clean up the land and mines are ongoing to this day. These shots are from three trips over a couple of months. I was really disappointed with the amount of graffiti and vandalism but the town and area itself was astonishing. I'd never seen anything quite like this place. Having explored most of the buildings on the upper side, we located a hotel, shops, bank, apartments, rec center with bowling alley, mechanic shops, laboratory, mills, houses and a hospital. And on two of the trips I found pyrite! 1.
