Getting perms from property owners and “legal” bandos

Hey folks.

Joined up at the start of the pandemic, and got my feet wet (literally and figuratively) in the Urbex community toward the end of this summer. Happened upon a couple places, and voila! Im hooked. Sadly to report i got busy between march and summer and sort of “forgot” about the forums. But anyway, a question for you lovely folks. Have you ever tried to secure permission from property owners to explore the abandoned buildings or even photograph them? How did it go? And how did you approach them?

I know for most American towns/counties, you can pull up whats called a GIS map, and it will tell you who owns the property and give you some
Contact info. Has anyone had luck going this route?

I have nothing against exploring places that are litered with “no trespassing “ signs but im honestly kind of a wuss, and would also more than likely lose my job if i got arrested. I try to stick to “safe” and legally grey bandos.

Any advice would be great, thanks!

You can try it, but it's a double edged sword. If they say yes, then you get risk free access. If they say no, then not only can you not use the "I didn't know I wasn't allowed here" excuse it'll be harder to explore in the future as you've drawn their attention to the property.

generally if youre in person and you ask and they say no which is seldom. but if they do, then just say fine and walk past them and explore it and tell them to call the cops. generally theyll just buy in and give you some history of the place etc. has worked numerous times. go for the bait and switch.

Gotta agree with Aran as well...I've generally gone with "easier to beg forgiveness than to seek permission".
Every situation is different, but I've noticed in my experiences which resulted in me being 'caught' on site, many of them end well, but the few times I sought permission (or arrived on a site and approached people who were already there) have ended in a "no", thereby identifying myself as a future issue, as Aran stated, or having to do the red tape shuffle...one place was a correctional facility where a few locals directed me to the PD, who referred me to the local hospital where I could contact the owner. I stopped after the PD, came back the next week, and explored it without issue.
Good luck to you, have fun and be safe!

If there's a FOR SALE sign out front, call the agent for a showing.

Other than that, it's pointless to ask for permission.

I've had permission visits to derelict or disused places before but only if I know there is no alternate way at all - and seen some amazing stuff because of it.

Just don't go touting them as legit exploring, because it's not, but you still get to see a place that the general public don't.

It’s worth a try, but it sounds like a big liability for the property owner to me. I’d only go that route if it’s impossible to get in and out with out being caught. It’s easier to ask for forgiveness then permission in my opinion.
