Military Oil Storage Facility

Sometimes it pays to shoot something totally different - especially when it's a place little more than an hour away which has been hiding in plain sight for years.

This site was a former military oil storage depot, which has been disused since the mid 1990s. The site comprises four enormous covered reservoirs sunk into the ground, as well as a handful of warehouse type buildings and a decontamination bunker. Three of the reservoirs are still securely sealed but one isn't, and it's one of the most spectacular things I've photographed all year.

Unfortunately the weather was terrible so I didn't get much of a chance to check out a lot of the above ground buildings as it was so miserably wet, but I will definitely be returning when the weather dries up a little.

We used to have a site like that over here, and I remember there being amazing acoustics. Now it's a cultural center.

Do you have any pictures of the exterior, or is that too sensitive?

Nice shots! I love the look of all those poles. The water was probably not fun to walk through but I think it added a cool look to the photos. Thanks for sharing.

I would have taken photos of the outside of the place but it was raining so much that I didn't want to risk soaking my camera - I've been meaning to go back for a while now but haven't found the time sadly.

I always love these old military sites. Pretty amazing shots. I can only imagine back in the day what this place might have looked like! Nice job!

The first few pictures look like it'd be an awesome set for an edgy music video location or something. Creepy vibes though.

That's awesome! Giant empty spaces underground like that are so surreal, I love it! Was there any oil slick in the water?

The water is surprisingly clear, I guess they did a very thorough job scrubbing the tank after it was decommissioned. The colour of the water is down to rust and sand settled at the bottom of the tank.

I finally managed to get back and reshoot the place today, without being soaked by torrential rain.
