The Videotape House

I've explored a fairly large amount of abandoned houses now, both good and bad, as they are an easy go-to when all else fails and you're stuck looking for something to do. However this one takes the cake for the strangest house I'll probably ever explore.

The house is located a mile down a track into the woods in the middle of nowhere miles from any sort of civilisation, it's by far the most isolated location I've explored. The surrounding woodland is silent apart from the noise of birds and insects so it's immediately like stepping off the face of the earth into a different world. Just behind the gateposts swallowed up by thorny bramble bushes is a rotten wooden bench, and after a couple of minutes more walking the first big thing you see is a car almost completely covered in more vegetation.

The house itself originally was some sort of lodge, and probably only had a couple of rooms. However over the years extensions were constructed and more rooms added, giving the house an unconventional layout and shape. From what we could tell, the house has been abandoned for around a decade however during that time the sub-standard construction of the extensions has either compromised the roofs, or collapsed them entirely. One of the stranger features was a pair of commercial aluminium framed doors attached to a partial wall at the rear of the property which lead to nowhere. Inside the property the original living space was divided in two by a simple breezeblock wall that wasn't even held together with anything and isn't at all secure. Behind that, a corridor ran the length of the house with rooms leading off it. There appeared to be not one but two kitchens, as well as, peculiarly, a sink and taps in the living room. What was the main bedroom appeared to have been the original kitchen space in the lodge as it had a large hearth and old fireplace inside it.

The most memorably strange feature though was that whoever lived here hoarded VHS cassette tapes to an insane degree. The two rooms that make up the older part of the house are completely filled with them either in piles, on shelves, or all over the floors. Doubles and triples of titles of all genres and styles, kids films, documentaries, feature films, cartoons, TV shows, box sets, anything and everything was hoarded. It'd be a bizarre enough sight in a house closer to civilisation but to see something so odd in a place so isolated is something else.

Over the years of abandonment the house has obviously been rummaged through and the inside is a mess however we spent much longer than I thought here as it's one of those places that got more and more interesting the more you looked around. The long walk up the drive was filled with jokey comments about horror films and Blair Witch and The Hills Have Eyes but thankfully nothing untoward happened...

What an oddball location. I love places that have so much laying around that you have to stop and look through it, as I just did with 3, 4, 5, and 14.

All i could think of was this person must of owned a VSH rental shop. Really popular in the 90's. Especially since you see multiples of alot of them. Either that or they was into dumpster diving when all these places went out of business lol.. either way, cool shots and plenty to see. Enjoyed your pics.

Perhaps, being a lodge, it had a huge selection of VHS tapes for guests to choose from? Killer find and great photos as usual.

It might have been a real disappointment for those persons when DVDs went out.
