"Violent J"

My adventures in discovering drains in the Colorado Springs area continue!

I still haven't found any huge or absolutely riveting drains, but I feel like I'm making progress with "Violent J". This is another drain I've found via outfall access.

I set out in my new boots in the afternoon, having scouted out the location beforehand. The boots were my big mistake. By the first mile of my walk, my ankles and toes were already blistering. By mile two, when I reached the outfall, they were screaming. No matter! The excitement of a new drain totally negates any amount of foot pain, if you ask me.

I had to bide my time nearby until the coast was clear of people and cars, and then I ducked inside. Like I'd expected, the pain in my feet was hardly noticeable with the rush of exploration, and the cool air was a welcome reprieve from the merciless sun outside. This drain isn't quite as tall as the last one I explored, so I had to bend my neck a little inside the tunnel. My estimate is that it's a 5 footer. The entrance, of course, was plastered with graffiti, and this continued on for a while. The majority was crudely drawn genitals and breasts, no surprise there. There was a boatload of ICP-related graffiti on the walls (which I failed to take photos of, might return to take some though,) which led to me choosing the nickname for the drain. There were also 4 or 5 messages saying things like "Death ahead" and "Turn back or die". Charming!

Spoiler alert: I continued onward, and did not die. A little deeper in, I found this, which made enough of an impression on me that I wanted to take a photo (rotated for improved readability.)

There was a nearby scrawling which read "Hail Satin", so this is either a common spelling error, or this person claims to have been mauled by a piece of fabric.

Along the way I noted a few offshoots which would be (barely) big enough to wriggle out of, if necessary. I encountered two GPT/manhole combinations, which are positioned diagonally across an intersection.

I climbed the stepirons and took a look out of the GPT slots to see which road I was on, and made eye contact with a woman in her car. Whoops! Hope I didn't freak her out too bad. I also tested the manholes (which I knew to be on sidewalk.) Easy to lift, which is good to know.

I took a right at the fork you see in the photos, opting for a more upright experience while I still could. The tunnel continued on without much excitement, just the occasional small drain branching off, and a few scattered pieces of graffiti. Eventually, it turned into a shorter oval pipe, and that's when I called it quits. Didn't feel up to crawling that day, but I will likely return with knee pads at some point. Before turning around, I took note of the dates on the walls.

Seems like the drain was built around 1969, and there was at least one explorer there in '88. It's exciting to me, finding these little snippets of history about a place.

I stopped for a while with my lights switched off, enjoying the sounds of the drain and the cool current of the air. It's one of the things I love the most about draining– the experience of true pitch-black darkness, the bouts of silence coupled with every sound echoing almost endlessly back to you.

For the first time, I turned around feeling relatively satisfied with how deep I was able to explore within a drain. The distance between my POE and the intersection with the GPT was about 0.4 miles, so I would estimate that it was around 0.7 miles to the point where I stopped. Not super impressive, but much further than I've been able to go before! The day ended with a two-mile limp back home on my battered feet, and a feeling of lingering excitement about what else this city's underbelly has to offer.
