66" RCP Underneath Bridge
entry by Floodway

Recently, I took my bike out along some local trails with the intention of going draining. I had scouted out one particular outfall, which is a CMP somewhere around 6-8' diameter (hard to tell without getting close). It looks pretty promising, but it's right between a row of houses and a trail, so getting in without being spotted has proven to be a difficult task. There were too many people outside for me to get myself and my bike in without arousing some attention, which was a big letdown.

With all my supplies in my pack and my hopes refusing to be crushed, I decided to turn around and check out another trail which looked promising, in my earlier google maps scouting. I rode for a few miles until the trail began to run alongside a creek– after a while of this, the creek passed beneath a street. There was a trail leading down from the bike path to the underpass, so naturally, I went down.

Underneath the bridge were several outfalls in various diameters. It felt like a goldmine, after the earlier letdown! The creek was low enough that it was easy to cross over, in order to enter a 66" RCP which had caught my eye. I rarely feel lucky to be a short guy, but not having to bend my neck in a 66" tunnel is definitely a blessing.

There were clothes and food wrappers scattered around under the underpass, but no people, for the time being. Hoping nobody would be there by the time I came back, I entered the outfall.

My expectations weren't super high, but it wasn't a terribly exciting drain, at least as deep as I went. I went past only two manholes-- after the second, the pipe split in two, and both ends began to taper down. I turned around shortly after this, only because I wanted to get home before sundown (I did, just barely!). I'll definitely come back and check out the rest of the drain-- I suspect that both ends taper down until they're impassable, and that there's nothing more exciting than that, but you never know. When I came back out, I was glad to see that nobody had appeared in the underpass when I was gone.
So, overall, it was a long day which yielded only a brief expedition. However, I'm pleased that I was able to find some walkable drains in my city, since it seems there hasn't been extensive draining done here (or, in any case, extensive draining which has been documented on UER). I know it's a bit of an underwhelming drain for those of you with experience, but I'm having a great time, and I think that's what counts!

A couple photos, nothing too exciting, but I like to document all of my 'splores.

Bonus: saw this manhole on my way home. I love being able to understand the markings– wonder if I'll be able to check out that 66" RCP once the road work is done!
